"An apple what?"

A friend of mine called in a panic. She received a pop up on her IMac saying her computer was compromised ahd that she should call "Apple Tech Support" at 1-800-656-8559. She called the number and was scammed for her credit card number to allegedly fix the problem. She has canceled her card and was told the charge would be removed and a new card issued. It's unclear whether the scammer has harvested any other sensitive information from her computer.
I told her to call the real Apple tech support number, but is there anything else she should do? If her computer is compromised, is there a remedy? An application or program she should run?
Any advice will be aporeciated.

Tell your “friend” to stay off of porn sites.
Tell her I have $10 million temporarily locked up in a Swiss account and I need $10 grand for legal fees to get it released. In return, she'll get $100 grand.

You can’t fix stupid. Your friend will fall for another scam, even if it is not computer related. Better to stay far from stupid people than to try to fix stupid. JMHO
That sounds unduly harsh. Are you speaking from personal experience?
Separately, in a new twist on Googlesurveillance, I received an email -- not just an ad in the margins of my gmail box -- from Sprint yesterday, minutes after I did a Google search on iPhones and surfed over to their site to check out iPhone 6 plans. I left no information on the Sprint site -- just clicked around and left. Google apparently took the liberty of matching my ip address with my gmail account to send me some Sprint marketing spam. The email also had some new disclaimer on the header, "sent by sprint via somebody else". The somebody else must be the entity that google uses to triangulate your contact info. Oh, those guys are so clever. Damn them.

I had always heard that Apple products couldn’t be hacked. Obviously, that’s not true.

It’s not a popup on her system, it’s on web pages. They’re custom-crafted advertisements. Do look a lot like actual system windows, no matter what the platform.
Tell her not to be so gullible.
Apple ping
I read a story here of a scam that targeted people who visited such sites.
I have a couple of friends who go into any old website. I tell them to be careful, but they don’t care. One friend had her email compromised. I started getting all these bogus emails allegedly from her account. Told her that her email was corrupted, but was greeted with a look of indifference. I had her email blocked. We aren’t close anymore.
