The Daily Tar Heel, the University of North Carolina's official newspaper, has declared that "yoga is oppressive" to religious minorities in the United States.
Nikhil Umesh, a senior environmental health science major from Greensboro and contributor to the Daily Tar Heel, wrote the article, titled, "Your yoga class is oppressive."
"During my time at UNC, I have noticed that yoga is a popular pastime among white Chapel Hill residents and students," Umesh writes, immediately making race an issue in his article.
"Yoga is historically and presently a spiritual and meditative practice, whose origins lay in Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. Yet," he continues, frustrated, "the Western variant of this centuries-old religious tradition has been whitewashed into physical mastery of various contortions for their own sake."
White people, according to Umesh, have "ravenously exotified, fetishized and butchered yoga. Like a pig ready to be picked, it has been hacked apart into a $27 billion industry."
But no more, Umesh declares. "I am writing this," he writes passionately, "to challenge the falsehood that America is a “melting pot of immigrants,” a colorblind meritocracy and that yoga’s widespread presence is a product of innocent cultural exchange. One-sided plundering of a culture is not “exchange.”"
White people are practically savages, he continues, abusing other cultures for their own gain.

Too much. So all those years of Baptist fundamentalists telling us Yoga was “of the devil” were ignored, but some anti-western victims claim Yoga oppresses them and we cancel it. Priceless.

It’s at very least extremely hypocritical. This guy is here taking every liberty with the freedom of education that we offer, a student at a very prestigious university, and he wants to talk about how western educational values are oppressing him?!!?

I remember back in 1986 an electrical engineering doctoral candidate wrote and article to the Auburn Plainsman that “football was the opiate of the masses.” People are always saying weird crap...
Whining that the dominant culture has taken too much of a liking to “the other”.

Tell you what Nikhil, you stop expropriating Western culture by using phones, planes, cars, computers, modern medicine, etc. and you can have your Yoga back.

Hey Nikhil, why are you writing in English? Why don't you write in Hindi, instead of culturally appropriating our language? You're practically a savage, plundering a culture for your college degree while stealing its very words to curse the people who made your education possible.
