Cops Shot And Killed 17-Year-Old Girl At Texas Police Station
Talking Points Memo ^ | January 26, 2015 | Caitlin MacNeal

Posted on 01/26/2015 9:36:02 PM PST by 2ndDivisionVet

The Longview Police Department placed three officers on leave after a 17-year-old girl was shot and killed in the lobby of the station last week, the Marshall News Messenger reported.

According to officials, Kristiana Coignard entered the Texas police station on Thursday evening brandishing a weapon. Police spokeswoman Kristie Brian said Coignard used a phone in the lobby to call police dispatch and asked to see an officer.

When officers arrived in the lobby, she "came at the officers" with a weapon, according to Brian. Police did not confirm what type of weapon Coignard had, but Longview Mayor Jay Dean said that she was carrying a knife, according to the Marshall News Messenger.

Justice of the Peace James Mathis said Coignard was shot "multiple times," according to the Marshall News Messenger.

Police have not released many details about the incident. It remains unclear why Coignard entered the police station and what occurred before she was shot.

The 17-year-old was living with her aunt, Heather Robertson, who told ThinkProgress that her niece had been struggling with mental illness.

“I think it was a cry for help," Robertson said about Coignard's actions last week. "I think they could have done something. They are grown men. I think there is something they are not telling us."

Robertson said her niece has struggled with depression and bipolar disorder since her mother died when she was four years old. Coignard has been hospitalized twice after trying to commit suicide. Robertson told ThinkProgress that Coignard "was only violent with herself."

The three officers involved in the incident were placed on leave, and the Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting.

Ok, I'm going to say it: we are doing to the police exactly what we are doing to the hero snipers and have done to the other heros in Viet Nam, Iraq and Afghanistan - politicians are dictating the rules of engagement instead of trusting the professionals to do their jobs! And the results will be exactly the same - unnecessary loss of American lives.

Huh? Seems like just the opposite. Cops get to shoot at the slightest provocation and the soldiers are handcuffed by the ROE. It should be the other way around. Remember, they are PEACE officers not soldiers. You want a military response to these kinds of situations where civilians are involved? This is what you'll get - unnecessary loss of American lives.

I like watching you lose an argument.

It was fun, thanks.

What argument? Stating my opinion in contrast to your opinion is discourse. I'm sure you think every discussion is an "argument".

Your opinion has no basis in fact or reality.

It isn’t discourse so much as it is entertaining the ramblings of a complete fool and a waste of time.

And a discussion is something I would have with a friend, which is not something that I consider you.

That was him, not me, you do as you please but don`t expect me to follow. As for this nut case, I`m not shedding tears for a psycho who offed herself, she wanted to die? Well she`s dead, one less loony to worry about, nuff said. See ya.

“Dude, she’s not an Agent in the Matrix...”

And neither is anyone else.

She’s running at you (or someone else) with a knife. You have at most 3 or 4 seconds to act. You have a loaded gun.

Under those conditions a gun is a bad choice. Handguns don’t kill immediately and the ninja girl in your scenario would still have time to slice you up. Unless of course you disarmed her.

I no longer wonder about the "ordinary German" and the Jews.

We got our own Police State, and cheerleaders are everywhere.

Yeah because Jews kept attacking the police. Right?

From a 5’3” 17 YO girl I’m not even going for the gun, I’ll risk a poke for that, it’s not like I’m going to be standing still.

There’s plenty of people I can think of shooting in that type of scenario and that ISN’T one of them.

You act as if the adversaries are equals. The officers have training in handling and subduing people.

People seem ready to excuse her CRIME at the drop of a hat...

OK, chris - you've called her a criminal, which is untrue, as far as I know.

Now, it appears as though she may have committed a crime much less than a minute before she was perforated a bunch.

You need to get a grip on your diction.

It does indeed appear that way, doesn’t it?

It would also appear that she was found guilty of said crime and punished for it straight away.

I’m satisfied with my diction on this matter.

If some future evidence comes to light that she did not attempt to attack police with a knife, then I’ll revisit the issue at such time.

What are you doing on a Constitutional website?

Did you get lost, and wander in here by accident?

Nope.

Did you?

One can certainly be guilty of a committing crime without being convicted in a court of law, or even having even been in a court of law.

If you have some problem with something I’ve said on this matter, I really don’t give a crap, dude.

Go take it up with the cops she attacked with a knife if it matters that much to you.

Rule of thumb:

The longer it takes to release the video(s), the more embarrassing it is.

Kristiana Cognard was shot and killed at 6:30 pm on Thursday, January 22, 2015.

It's 5 days later, and still no video(s). Hmmmmmmm.

I'll wait.

You'd best hope that the video(s) is not embarrassing. Of course, if it wasn't, they'd have dumped it out in the public domain on Monday.

Maybe tomorrow. LOL! :)

Why had I best hope the video(s) not embarrassing?

I don’t have any stake in this. I am just going on the story cited in this thread.

That’s kinda how threads work.

If some other evidence comes to light at some future date, then some other evidence comes to light at some future date.

But for the purposes of this story and the thread that pertains to it, these cops are perfectly within their rights of self defense, aren’t they?

Yeah, yeah they are. You know it as well as I do.

LOLexclamtionpointsmileyface....
