Since the film opened earlier this month, "American Sniper" has stirred up passionate responses from critics and supporters alike. What began as a surprise box-office hit, raking in $105 million its opening weekend, is now a flashpoint for conservative and liberal views of the Iraq war.
The movie follows the life of Chris Kyle – one of the deadliest snipers and a US Navy SEAL – and his deployment on four tours to Iraq. During this time, he was credited with 160 kills before he was honorably discharged in 2009 after 10 years of service. His 2012 memoir, also titled "American Sniper," bluntly illustrates the realities of war and the trauma experienced by many vets.
Why has the movie sparked so much debate?
Critics say the movie unashamedly glorifies war while also showing the deep disconnect between civilians and the military. Matt Taibbi of Rolling Stone described the antagonist as a “killing machine with a heart of gold,” and questioned the accuracy of the simplified depiction of the Iraq war....

Odd to criticize a movie called "American Sniper" for being a movie about an American sniper. If they want to criticize Rumsfeld and Cheney, they should make the movie "Rumsfeld and Cheney" and see how much interest it generates. Next they'll criticize "Frozen" for having too much ice and ignoring the other three seasons.
I saw it tonight. I don’t think it glorified or condemned war. It was one man’s story and dealt with his motivations and struggles to do what he thought best for his comrades-in-arms, his country, and his family. It was NOT a political movie.
Now that we've heard the bull****, let's get to the truth. American Sniper is still #1 at the box office and has already made over 150 million bucks. As of this weekend, it is still raking in the BIG bucks. Selma is at #7 and has brought in 35 million bucks and appears to have run its course. The mobbed theaters on MLK day to see Selma didn't materialize. The "progressive" commie libs still have to bear the burden of "white guilt" and "white privilege" with no relief in sight.
Imagine what a dog a liberal-produced hit film on Cheney/Rumsfeld would be...lol

That’s idiot Liberals for ya. Typical of them to reach around behind the topic, and grab something off the floor to piss about.
We went to the matinee today to see Mortdecai (had some funny moments, but overall just so-so). The box office line for American Sniper was wrapped around the lobby. We saw it last week and the theater was pretty full then. They’re still packing them in big time. Maybe people who weren’t all revved up about seeing it and doing so just to spite the liberal loudmouths.
We might have gone to see Selma, but it didn’t come to our local theater. Maybe it will eventually, but I and many others suffer from “racial fatigue” so maybe we’ll just take a pass altogether.
I have never heard a movie theater be so quiet when the final credits rolled.

In writing a critique of a movie like American Sniper, which is based on a book by...an American Sniper, it might help if they first sat and watched the movie. It's not about politics or Rumsfeld and Cheney. What idiots for wondering why a movie based on a book by the central character, Chris Kyle, is not about someone else on their political radar?
They should be dismissed for what they are, a third-rate publication with no credibility.
That is the bottom line. Selma flopped.

I’m a vet, saw the movie last week, and heartily concur with that opinion!
I will admit that some parts were VERY difficult for me to watch because of the memories they dredged up in me.
When an unbiased film about an American hero sets records in attendance and profitability it sends shockwaves through the Hollywood movie industry. It is an end run around Hollywood’s liberal monopoly. Liberals are in great fear that if this type of film is shown to be more profitable than their typical BS that it could be the beginning of the end of their ability to rot our country’s moral fiber.
