There's no shortage of historical instances where people were murdered by the state-establishment for nothing more than daring to criticize those who assumed dominion over them.

Yes. And in all those cases, the fact that they were KILLED is of greater importance than the fact that their freedom of speech was compromised. But, in this case, the rally in favor of freedom of speech will not do a thing for freedom of speech. They repeatedly cited freedom of the “press”.
