Texas Poll: Should Open Carry of Arms Require Texans to Have a License?
Gun Watch ^ | 21 December, 2014 | Dean Weingarten

Posted on 12/20/2014 7:16:24 PM PST by marktwain

On December 9th, radio station KFYO ran an Internet poll on whether or not Texans should be required to have a license in order to openly carry arms in Texas. Here is the question from kfyo:

If Open Carry passes, should you have to get a license to carry? Let us know in today’s KFYO Poll of the Day.
The poll still appears to be open.  I do not see absolute numbers, but the sentiment that Texans should not have to pay for a license to exercise a right is winning by nearly five to one.

Here is a link to the poll.

Here is a typical response in the comments, by Martin Cohn:
I don't have to pay a tax to the govmt to exercise my other Constitutionally protected Civil Rights. Why should 2A be any different.
Here is an atypical reply by Zeus Odin:
What's so bad about getting a license to carry a lethal weapon in public?
It is clear that the intensity and level of commitment are on the side of those pushing for open carry without a license.   It should not be too hard to push in Texas, as it already exists in 31 other states without a problem.

Criminals almost never openly carry guns, because it calls attention to their actions.

Interesting that this is a poll from a radio station in Lubbock, Texas.

Constitutional carry, all the way. Constitutional rights don’t require “permission.”

I have a friend who would agree with all the “NO” votes given that we already have a constitutional right to bear arms. If that’s so, why do we need a license i.e. permission, when it has already been granted.

I’m all for open carry, but some folks here have just been stupid in how they have been going about it.

The problems is the right has been undefended for so long that it has atrophied from lack of use.

It was so seldom used, that many assumed it was no longer valid.

License refers to a privilege. The right to keep and bare arms, is a right!
I always wondered why they gave up their firearms in the old West.

It was mostly because Texas was on the losing side in the War Between the States, or the Civil War, if you prefer:

Guess I’m on the right track with learning to shoot, weapon ownership and eventually CHL. Not sure that I personally would open carry my handgun of choice, but I would certainly support it without a license.

Agreed. I cringe when I see the same degree of “in your face” aggression from pro gun people that we see from, for instance, the gay mafia. I'm an old enough biker to remember when people thought we were all low life violent criminals. We got accepted not by being rude and aggressive but by being nice guys and stopping to help old ladies with flat tires and such. I have made quite a few converts here in Il. to concealed carry just by politely sharing some facts with them. Of course when they realize that some one as charming and handsome as I carry they know it's OK.-)

The “in your face aggression” by open carriers is almost entirely fiction created by our opponents.

Certainly you saw the same thing with motorcyclists.

I'm normally against government mandates, but here I make exception. Required carry.

Crime would drop near zero, peace would cover the land. Gangs and crooks would wither and die.

You can’t judge a book by it’s cover :) One of my very favorite ministers is young, with earrings and a few tattoos, but you talk about someone who can preach and lives the Word!

Sure, there is a reason for stereotypes. However, there are those who break the ill conceived perceptions.

After I took my new shooter class 10 days ago, I found out quite a few of my female friends are completely interested and some of them already have their CHLs. Had no idea that so many women were ready to or already carrying :)
