Friendship between people with widely divergent views is common except in cults or in some totalitarian societies due to fear.
It’s also the only way to influence people to change their thinking.
Pontificating from afar at them has the opposite effect.

The mistake is assuming that George W. Bush is a conservative. He was more conservative than Gore or Kerry, but that is not saying much.
