SIERRA VISTA Traffic tickets are no longer being issued from video captured by traffic safety cameras in Sierra Vista as of Nov. 5, following the passage of proposition 408 in last Tuesdays election.
The contract between the City of Sierra Vista and Redflex includes a provision that the city can terminate the agreement with no penalty if citizens vote to ban the use of photo enforcement. A grassroots effort brought the question to the Nov. 4 ballot, which passed by a large majority.
While the actual removal of the cameras is the vendors responsibility, we can and do respect the voice of the voters, so the city immediately ceased issuing citations based on Redflex video, says City Manager Chuck Potucek. Redflex has been notified of the citys actions.
The traffic safety cameras had been operational in Sierra Vista since November 2011, when the first camera was installed at Fry Boulevard and Seventh Street.
Our officers will periodically monitor driver behavior at the five intersections previously covered by the Redflex contract, but certainly not to the extent that a 24 hour camera could do, says Police Chief Tom Alinen.
We sincerely hope that motorists continue to maintain safe driving habits now that the cameras are no longer assisting with enforcement.
There was a guy down in Phoenix who used to drive through them with a monkey mask on.
Ha Ha! That is so funny. And I do believe in following the law. But it made me laugh anyway!
Now I’ll be more inclined to go to Sierra Vista. The one time I went there I saw all those revenue enhancers and never went back. And I don’t live that far away.
Yeah, they caught the monkey-man. He was a “tall poppy” and he got cut down. He would consistently speed over 100 miles past those cameras and once they started covering him on the news the LEOs made a point out of hunting him down
