In an intentional attempt to study and potentially confuse children, children were asked "There are 25 sheep and 5 dogs in a flock. How old is the shepherd?" Why might you ask this supposedly common-core aligned question?

According to the teachers who created this problem, it is to teach students that they must:

1. Explain the meaning of a problem.

2. Plan a solution pathway rather than simply jumping into a solution attempt.

3. Continually ask themselves, "Does this make sense?"

This question has actually been researched for years, and is still being asked to children. Today, however, it is now considered aligned with the common core because it forces children to think about their strategies in answering questions.

So, how did students actually answer the question? As expected, with a great amount of confusion: Common Core Math

Let’s say you’re a shepherd.

You have 25 sheep, 10 goats, and 4 sheep dogs.
You lose 1 goat and 2 sheep to a mountain lion.
You lose another goat to a wolf.
3 of your sheep have twins, and 10 have single lambs.

What color are the shepherd’s eyes?

If you are the shepherd, the the color of the shepherd’s eyes are your own eye color.

There can be no other answer than, “Not enough information provided to determine”. Which is what I would put and tell my children to put and defy anybody to claim otherwise...

"There are 25 Sheep and 5 Dogs in a Flock. How Old is the Shepherd?"

Shepherd is capitalized. Therefore I assume "the Shepherd" is a reference to Christ. The answer is infinite. He has always existed.

This makes no sense. How old is the shepherd. How is a child supposed to know. Sounds more like they are to infer more into the question. Gee like I do not hav enough problems with word problems. So ask these type of questions is absolutely Nuts.

The Shepherd is less than 14 years old because that is the normal life expectancy for that species of dog.

“There are 25 sheep and 5 dogs in a flock. How old is the shepherd?”

Actual Correct Answer

The shepherd now has great medical care because of our lord and savior Barrack Obama.

I have no idea how old he is, but he certainly isn’t a “shepherd”. He’s a city boy. Any shepherd worth his salt would handle a mere 25 sheep with one dog.
