Why the NFL is under assault - and why we must support the league
EEE | 19 SEPTEMBER 2014 | EEE

Many FReepers, unfortunately, are not grasping the underlying reasons why the NFL is suddenly in the news over recent incidents of domestic violence and subsequent calls for Goodell to resign. They are swallowing the leftist media narrative and seeing the issue through their microcosm rather than putting everything into context. I've been flamed on various NFL threads for merely pointing what Rush Limbaugh predicted several years ago, and I actually began to realize it when the demands for ex-players' compensation for concussions and other football-related injuries began to surface. This should have been obvious to even newbies here.

Please note: I am in no way, shape, or form defending the scumbags who commit heinous crimes on or off the field. I am specifically talking about an Alinsky-type leftist agenda that threatens the future of the league.

Ask yourself why the NFL is being targeted. The answer is that the NFL is the very definition of capitalism, hard work, merit, and freedom. All of these, the Left despises, so the game must be destroyed. The sidebar arguments - that the NFL has its share of thugs, that taxpayers cough up money for half-billion dollar stadiums, and that they pay out the nose for overpriced concessions and DirecTv packages so they can get the NFL Sunday Ticket - is missing the point and pales in comparison to the Left's overall goal of destroying the game.

If the NFL goes, what's to stop the Left from going after NASCAR under the guise of stopping climate change? Golf, under the guise of protecting land and wildlife? Hockey, under the guise of protecting "scarce" water resources? It will create a domino effect and will finish off what's Left of America.

You don't have to be an NFL fan to understand what is really happening. First, the Left spoke out against concussions. Then it was making the game safer than it already is. Now we have to have the first gay player drafted, and now it's off-field incidents. Crazy off-field incidents have been happening since the league was born. Broadway Joe, Bill Romanowski spitting, Ray Lewis possibly kills someone; all not a peep. Favre texts his junk to some chick, not a peep. Ray Rice beats his fiancé, 24/7 breaking news and demands for diversity training and for the commissioner to resign. Keep in mind that Goodell has pretty much given the Left wanted. It's never enough with these people.

Why, all of a sudden, are these coming out NOW? Is it because football provides an escape for the vast majority of people and the Left is pissed that these people are self-sufficient and don't need elites in Washington telling them what to do?

Also, keep in mind the secondary jobs that are created by the NFL. The advertising executives who produces the funny commercials, the mom-and-pop sports bars and restaurants, security, the folks who work the concessions and do stadium maintenance and grounds keeping. The military support - the planes that fly over the stadium and the national anthem. If football is destroyed, all of those jobs will disappear. But that's the Left's objective.

Also, there may be thugs in the NFL, but they're paying taxes. Look at all the black millionaires in the NFL. You don't think the Left hates the fact that poor blacks were able to get up out of the ghetto and become famous and make millions of dollars without the need of a Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton holding their hand?

1. Many of the team owners are liberal Democrats.

2. Most are crony capitalists who loot the taxpayer with subsidized stadiums and other goodies.

3. Hollywood dingbats can own equity in teams but Rush Limbaugh can’t?

4. Quotas must be applied based on skin color when interviewing for coaching positions.

5. Pink must be worn to support pro-abortion groups under the guise of fighting breast cancer.

Nope. The NFL has self-destructed. Let them reap what they’ve sowed.

The horse's asses at CBS plastered the picture of that leftist skank who runs Pepsi -- why? -- and read the quote from her regarding the supposed epidemic of wife-beating. Don't for a second think this is anything but all about Hitlery. Thanks Extremely Extreme Extremist.

I agree.

But the question seems to me “Why the NFL?”

Why not, for instance, doctors? Or cops?

Every occupation has it’s share of lowlifes.

Why not journalists?

How many of those publicly expressing indignation about the NFL and the acts of violence are absolutely MUTE when it comes to showing the reported 55,000,000 aborted babies? Many of these critics are also supportive that a person has the legal right to do this.

Perhaps it would be fitting to choose a site to honor these hypocrites and erect statues of them made from body parts that are modeled after the body parts of the aborted babies!

The NFL needs to be under assault. For so many reasons.
The amount of lawlessness that is tolerated and accepted because of the money factor is disgusting.
Then lets go to the play on the field. The league is rapidly turning Pro Football into tag football. A defender looks at a receiver wrong and a flag is thrown. Why have kick offs? The vast majority are flagged with some silly penalty. No the NFL needs to get its act together in many areas.......

I’ve come to regard the NFL as a ridiculous circus and very much a part of the rotten establishment. Taxpayer-funded stadiums are welfare for billionaire owners and multimillionaire players. Men are more wrapped up in the whole soap opera of professional sports. Not just watching the games but spending multiple hours a week on what happened in games already played and what will happen in upcoming games. Time better spent with family, etc. And all a distraction from what is going on with criminal and corrupt rulers.
THAT SAID (AND MORE!)THESE ATTACKS ON THE NFL ARE BECAUSE IT IS MALE AND CAPIATALIST. IT IS STRENGTH AND WEALTH ON DISPLAY. THEY HATE THAT.

I don’t have the time to waste watching a bunch of steroid freaks bash each other.
Nor would I spend any of my hard earned cash supporting a league that’s makes crap loads of cash while being a non profit group.

Me neither.Especially since Ziggy Wilf and our legislature teamed up to screw taxpayers in Minnesota.

How the NFL Fleeces Taxpayers

Taxpayers fund the stadiums, antitrust law doesn’t apply to broadcast deals, the league enjoys nonprofit status, and Commissioner Roger Goodell makes $30 million a year.

Like the Republican Party, the NFL went all-in on PC, thinking the dominant socialists would spare it from intended extermination. Won’t work for the GOP and won’t work for the NFL. All it did was make the GOP and NFL the subject of derision for being useful idiots, and still destined for extermination.

No. The NFL is under attack because they have seriously misplayed a couple of situations. First the Redskins, while all the smart folks in the world (including the vast majority of Indians) don’t find the name offensive once the meme started standing “strong” against it wasn’t the right play. The right play was to begin a “study/ survey” of Indian tribes in the region to find a name “they would agree honored their heritage”. 5 years later you come out and say “turns out they’re all cool with Redskins”.

So then, while they’re still misplaying that comes the Ray Rice thing. Quite simply botched. From not doing a good job of getting all the evidence, to the joint press conference for the Rices, to not having any domestic abuse experts involved at any level. Basically they made every possible screw up.

And part of the problem is that Goodell has always kept punishment his bag. Smart leagues “out source” suspensions to some title other than commissioner. Head of officiating is a good one, or make it the sum total of one guy’s job. Smartest play would be to make it a committee with somebody from the league, somebody from the PA, and some lawyer type. What makes that work well is when they botch something as badly as the Rice situation was they can just fire them.

But this too shall pass. Goodell ain’t stupid, though he has definitely been playing one on TV lately. He’s put together the people, he’s throwing around the money, he’s timing his press conferences for Friday afternoon so they get the smallest amount of play, he’s got the teams onboard for strict harsh punishment from first indictment. The furor will die down, new policies will be in place, players will clean up their act. And the NFL will get to stand tall as the only major sports league in the world taking domestic violence seriously.

Hockey on the other hand... guys have their nose broken, go to the locker room, then come back out 5 minutes later with a face cage and their nose packed full of cotton. They lose teeth and don’t mind. And when they get in fights, they get 5 minutes in the penalty box and come back out.

Oh I agree. But hockey is a Canadian game and Canada has funny rules for everything. E.g., they allow total nudity in their "gentlemens clubs" aka The Canadian Ballet, but you can only buy booze in a government store. Oh, and Fox News is not allowed up there. When I stay in a hotel in Canada the room tv have only Canadian stuff and that is one reason why I don't like staying more than a couple days at a time across the border. (I live in Buffalo)

The NFL is in the entertainment business. Like anyone else in the entertainment business their continued success depends on their image, and they are free to discipline their employees in any manner consistent with their contractual obligations and the collective bargaining agreement with the NFLPA. It’s not a left-wing plot for the NFL to want to publicly take out the trash.

Why care about the NFL? I love football and I hate lefties. If they are trying to destroy football ‘to protect the widdo man-boys from hurting themselves,’ then I support football all the more.

So, what's left of America is NFL, NASCAR, Golf, hockey, and whatever the related dominos are. I never thought of it that way.

Oh well, still don't care deeply about it. Not any of it.

Absolutely agree.

There was never anything wrong with “moral clauses” back in the day; back when morals, ethics and civility broadly ruled in society, across all classes, races and economic levels. And, church on Sunday regularly.

(But that was generation raised by serious parents and serious parenting, armed with belts, switches, and the will to raise good and well behaved kids.)

Much of the above is against the law, or soon will be, and ALL of it is politically incorrect or frowned upon.

Our decadent culture has stolen most of three generations, who can’relate to social and family disciplines and punishment, Sunday church, morals and ethics.

The NFL is at the mercy of the politically correct, because the NFL is a reflection of the players and the culture.
