What has America done for the music tradition of Western Civilization?
WesternCulture

Or sooner; What has the US done to the music tradition of Western Civilization?

There are plenty of Americans who understand and appreciate great composers like Beethoven, Vivaldi, Albinoni, Bach and Mozart, but something must be wrong with a nation that year after year produces crap like the music of 50 Cent, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga.

I'm European and I admit we make a lot of worthless music too, but at least we Europeans are fostered in the great tradition of composers like the giants mentioned above.

I don’t know about that. It’s considered traditional.

Hard rock is blues based and is very American. Metal is classical based which is why it started in Europe.

However, the hard rock torch is now being carried by Sweeden these days, which I don't get, but love you guys for it.

Richard Rodgers’ score for Victory At Sea comes immediately to mind. Not a movie, but close enough.

Your ignorance of American music is no basis for a conclusion that America has contributed nothing.

Really. Tell me about it. Its worse than that, though. Have you heard what passes for country music these days?

“What has Sweden done for it, lol?”

Not much, admittedly. Our neighbor country Norway has the great composer of Grieg and Finland has Sibelius, but at least we Swedes have Alvén. This is his tribute to Scandinavian midsummer:

But it can’t really be compared to this masterpiece by Grieg:

But this is why I love Pandora (streaming radio) and I have loaded my Kindle to the gills with music.

Virtually all of America's music comes from negroes and I will openly say I am not proud of it, and it think it has been destructive to our society. The jungle beat is not the heart beat of advancing civilization.

I would not have said that 10 years ago -- but Obama and Holder have freed me to join the honest conversation about race which is so long overdue.

Very well said and I agree completely. Even here on Free Republic, I find too many defending that kind of "music", be it rap or that so-called jumpy "soul" music. I don't even like it when Mark Levin plays that harsh caterwauling of Ray Charles. The song "America the Beautiful" is meant to be solemn and reverential -- not a bunch of wild screaming. Years ago, I've wrote him asking that it be replaced by a military chorus or soloist like this moving rendition.

“we Swedes have Alvén”

Proper spelling is Alfvén. I apologize.

Not all music by Negroes is jungle beat. Negro spirituals, which W. E. B. Du Bois, in his book The Soul of Black Folk (Chicago; McClurg, 1903) called the only art form native to America, can be quite melodic. George Gershwin's work was heavily influenced by black American music.

Did you know that the apartment in NYC where Dvorak wrote The New World Symphony was converted into homosexual health facility just a few years back?

Let's not forget that the Beatles, Clapton, and the Stones were influenced greatly by early American rock. For example, who was the most covered artist by the Beatles on their albums?

Carl Perkins.

Check out "Million Dollar Quartet" when you get the chance...great story...great music. My 12 YO son and I spent 3 hours at Sun Studio in Memphis earlier this year. It was an unforgettable adventure, being in a place where musical history was made.
