SEPTEMBER 8, 2014 Psychologist: Minorities Are Obese Because of Racism Are racial microaggressions making you fat? One professor at an N.J. public university thinks so. By Katherine Timpf
A study by Rutgers University – Newark claims that minorities are obese because racial microaggressions cause them to eat fast food and avoid exercise.
“When you are exposed to negative stereotypes, you may gravitate more toward unhealthy foods as opposed to healthy foods,” said Luis Rivera, the experimental social psychologist who conducted the study.
“You may have a less positive attitude toward watching your carbs or cutting back on fast food, and toward working out and exercising,” he explained.
Rivera said Hispanics who believed negative stereotypes about themselves were three times more likely to be overweight or obese — evidence that the obesity comes from believing the stereotypes.
He said that these stereotypes were spread not only through the mass media, but also subconsciously through seemingly harmless social interactions, including so-called microaggressions.

She is just against junk food for the peons. Judging from the mass of her caboose, I would guess that she eats as many donuts as she wants.
or maybe that most of them are on welfare, food stamps and their kids on free lunch and breakfast at school.
So they get most of their food free and then with their own money buy more food.
Maybe if the writer lived in a black area they would see that when most blacks or whites on food stamps do their shopping , then their baskets are full of just junk food, and who eats out at the junk food burger places mostly?
how about those on food stamps can only get veggies and fruit instead of their junk food I see every time I go shopping

A recent survey of 1,936 adults conducted by The Washington Post and the Kaiser Family Foundation found that while black women are heavier than their white counterparts, they have higher self-esteem and a better body image. Of the average-sized and thin white women polled, 41% reported high self-esteem, but among black women considered overweight or obese by government standards, 66% reported high self-esteem.
Does anyone still think that we can get along, that is a future integrated society?
What is this “junk food is cheap” stuff. Have you priced that stuff in the store? $4.00 for a bag of potato chips is not cheap. For that I can buy and make a nice dinner of pork loin, rice and salad.
Stereotypical application of psychology.
You are obese because of racism? Essentially that statement alone is stereotypical of a white elitist. It is a hugely aggressive racist viewpoint and lays upon the black person that they cannot be in control of their own self-esteem. Instead they need the white elite academics and government to create that for them.
I guess instead of calling them “fat people”, which is offensive, we will now have to call them “people of fat”.
