Hey that’s me! Starting Monday. Not necessarily the way I want to do it, but the way I have to.
That’s me, too.
What business?
It’s also called the underground economy.
We are all freelancers whether we know it or not.
We sell our services to the highest bidder.
That’s great news. The more small business people like me and others on this thread, the better. Creating your own job - which, tragically, is all that I have managed to do with my little solo law practice thus far - really brings one face-to-face with the harsh realities of taxation, regulation, getting paid, meeting payroll, navigating the ACA, personal financial planning, and so on and on. The more this trend continues, the more people will see how nuts the Dems are with their policies - everything from punitive tax rates to the ruinous ACA to mandating a $15/hr minimum wage.
There really is no other way now.
With huge regulations in business and in various other areas along with insane hiring requirements, freelance is the only way to survive and run an effective business.
I’m a job prostitute pulling down something north of 100K annually. Best thing, I not really responsible for anything.
Hang in there. Keep networking to develop clients and a referral base, and keep sharpening your skills. You already know how difficult it is and can build from where you are now.
Elance.com. Works for me.
I’m not sure from your post if you are freelancing also, but there are quite a few lawyers on the freelance sites, - many specialists of one sort or another. At least, they advertise that they are.
It’s easy enough to tell how successful they are (or aren’t).
Formed an S-Corp.
FReegards!
Fundamentally, for many it’s a way of Going Galt. Earn less, but with less stress. Earn enough to be healthy and happy, but quit working like a slave just so the state can steal much of it and give it away to those who don’t work. Hopefully, work less so there is more time to enjoy life before you’re too broken down to enjoy the fruits of your labor. Tune in, turn on and drop out. Go Galt, young man. Go Galt.
In other words, businesses are folding, or struggling, and Obamacare is killing full-time work.
“Freelancing” is a euphemism for scrabbling for a living.
It can be, or it can be just the opposite.
A family member shared just this week that at end of 2015 many of their company employees will be working from home. They are gearing up for this now. She’s making an office out out of a storage shed they housed garden equipment and mowers in. Very excited to work so close to her house and not have to fight city traffic!
I understand it will be on a volunteer basis at first.
....”work less so there is more time to enjoy life before youre too broken down to enjoy the fruits of your labor”....
That’s exactly what I did two years ago and never looked back. It’s wonderful I have to say! I now know what it means when it’s said time ‘is’ money..... I’m actually making more money than I did before!
It’s what I do. Thing is I’ve been lucky....something has come up at last second. It’s like jumping from lilly pad to lilly pad. Always scared there won’t be another. I liked it at first....but to reinvent myself financially I have to leave Chicago.
