Chuck Todd: Americans Who Don't Pay Income Tax Fund Gov't More than Rich by Playing Lottery, Slots
Breitbart's Big Journalism ^ | August 26, 2014 | Tony Lee

(VIDEO-AT-LINK)

Chuck Todd, the new host of NBC's Meet The Press, suggested that Americans who do not pay income tax fund public education more than the rich by buying lottery tickets and going to casinos.

While interviewing Ben Carson on CSPAN's After Words, which aired on Sunday, Todd said that Americans who don't pay federal income tax go to casinos or buy lottery tickets and are "spending more money funding our schools, whether it's Detroit or other places." Todd said that though "they are not writing a check to the federal government," poorer Americans "are contributing arguably more money to education [by buying lottery tickets or at casinos] than the rich."

One can argue how lucrative casinos in urban areas are or how much lottery tickets actually fund public education, but nobody is forced to play Powerball, Mega Millions, or go to casinos. Americans, by law, must pay taxes. That's a big difference...

Lotteries are a tax on the desperate. The participation demographics are overwhelmingly low income people.

Government lotteries prey on those they claim I must give up my money to help. The money I end up providing for them thru entitlement programs ends up buying many tickets

So I bet I buy my share of tickets thru this money laundering scheme.

Soooo...expanding on that if someone keeps the money he earns he can probably SPEND IT BETTER THAN THE GOVERNMENT WHEN IT CONFISCATES IT.

That is what conservatives and Tea Party have been saying!

Yes the STUPID is STRONG with this one.

http://blogs.edweek.org/edweek/marketplacek12/2014/03/wash_considers_gambling_with_future_lottery_proceeds_to_benefit_schools.html

“A Wells Fargo report on lottery revenue, obtained by Education Week, states that currently an estimated 8 percent of school funding nationally comes from the $18 billion generated annually in lottery and gaming sales.”

The article is more about Washington State securing bonds (loans) based on projected revenues from gambling. Sort of a “bet-on-a-bet.”

Gambling brings in some money. Pot sales in Washington State may as well (although I think those taxes are going to medical things).

I’m waiting for when prostitution will be pushed to be the next thing to raise revenue.

“Prostitutes for Preschoolers”
“Hookers for High School”

Timber sales used to amount for most of the education funding in the state of Washington.

I am all in favor of lotteries because they are a tax on poor people. It is even funnier when a poor person wins a lottery, and is poor again in 2 to 5 years. The only thing that sucks is probably at least half of the money spent on lottery tickets by poor people is taxpayer money.

$18 billion in lottery and gaming sales

How much of that is paid out as winnings? How much is the overhead costs? How much do the private contractors that actually run the lottery get paid?

How much of that lottery revenue would have been spent on food, cars, gas or housing otherwise?

From the article:

“The Washington State Lottery made $565 million during the 2012-13 fiscal year. According to the annual revenue report, 60 percent of that money was used for awarding prizes, and another 20 percent was divvied up among sales, administration, retailer commission, economic development, and state programs. The remaining 20 percent of the lottery earnings was used for the Washington Pathways account that funds higher education.”

Good point on spending / investing the money wisely would be a better return for the government perhaps. Most of those things you mentioned have a sales tax in Washington state.

These lotteries remind me of the line in that one movie with the girl heroine with the bow and arrow fighting against the all-powerful government (The Hunger Games) where the president says something like:

“It is good for the people to have Hope. Just not too much of it.”

Whether this is true or not is not the real point of the article I think.

Most conservatives are against illegal immigration because they don't pay taxes, among other legitimate objections. This article is saying that, although they don't write a check on 4/15, they actually pay more in other ways, namely, the lottery and casino gambling.

Therefore, all you suckers should know that these DREAMERS are putting good money into gov’t coffers - even more in taxes than you or I. So now that you hate-filled conservatives know this, lighten up on the amnesty thing.
