In one you could be “sentenced” to attend a week long off-campus course in “diversity, gender studies and cultural sensitivity.”

I was not sentenced, but I had to take the tests a few times over. It was some years ago, after retirement, when I took a beer-money job on the night shift at Wal-Mart. They had a series of surveys/tests you had to take within a certain amount of time.

One was on sexual harassment. They gave a set of scenarios and jokes and asked how I would respond. I failed the damned test three times and for the life of me, could not see where I was wrong, as the "blonde" type of jokes were really funny. Same with the scenarios. I finally limped across home base with the minimum passing grade the fourth time. I thought it freaking hilarious that I was so out of touch with the current management thinking. Surprisingly, no one ever said anything.

I had to take an ethic’s course and pass it. One of the questions was, “A foreigner gives you a gift worth more than $50, what do you do?” The correct answer was return it. Wow! Depending on the culture that could be a relationship ending event. You never want to embarrass somebody. So I answered, return it. But I’d simply have quietly informed by boss, providing I had a relationship where I could trust him. Otherwise, I’d have just ignored the requirement. What matters is what I understood about the culture of the person giving the gift. There’s a huge difference between, say, $200 theater tickets and a night out with a prostitute. (A program manager I worked for kept a black book of all the favor’s he’d done. They included drugs, hookers and bailing customers out of jail.)
