LOS ANGELES – Nearly 500 people are expected to converge on Crenshaw High School Saturday for the Trayvon Martin Foundation’s 2014 LA Peace Walk and Peace Talk, hosted by Martin’s parents, Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin, organizers said this week.
Local activists and civic leaders will join young people at the quarter-mile march that will honor “the right that all people should be able to walk safely on their streets,” says local organizer Vanessa Bolden.
Martin, 17, was killed in February 2012 as he returned from a convenience after buying Skittles and a soft drink. George Zimmerman admitted killing Martin, but said he did so in self-defense. Zimmerman later was acquitted.
The symbolic walk around Crenshaw High will address safety concerns when it comes to people walking freely and safely in their communities, Baden said. It is one of several events being held nationally to commemorate the one-year anniversary of Zimmerman’s acquittal.
“Power 106” morning show host Big Boy is one of the celebrities invited to speak at the walk, along with Community Coalition head Marqueece Harris Dawson.
Following the Peace Walk, Big Boy and Dawson will help moderate a Peace Talk with several panelists, including rapper Nipsey Hussle and Temptation actress Jurnee Smollett.
The Peace Talk is intended to discuss ideas and strategies for stemming the tide of gun violence and racial profiling in Los Angeles and throughout the nation, Baden said.

Does it ever dawn on them that the only person in that confrontation that night that was in his own community was George Zimmerman? Didn’t he have a right to walk safely in his community?
And how many peace walks were done for whites who’ve been murdered by blacks??
Free Skittles, Lemonade soft drink, and a Knockout T-Shirt for walkers on the “Trayvon Martin Trail of Tears” peace walk. Walkers will be expected to donate $100 to the Trayvon Martin Memorial Innocent Black Child Gun Violence Fund administered by his beloved grieving parents, Inc.
