Poll: Proud to Be an American? Forty-Four Percent Say No

It seems the patriotism and unity the nation experienced in the aftermath of 9/11 has waned—and quite considerably, according to a recent Pew poll.

Fox News has the details:

[A]n exhaustive new Pew poll shows that actual patriotism is in the dumps. An amazing 44 percent of all respondents said they didn’t often feel proud to be American. Only 28 percent said that America was the greatest nation on earth. Not surprisingly, there’s a strong split on a partisan level, with Democrats more likely to say they are less proud to be an American.

Pew divided their sample into different categories across the left-right political spectrum. When asked if respondents “often feel proud to be American,” a majority of strong liberals, 60 percent, said no. The only group that solidly agreed with the statement was conservatives, ranging from 72 percent to 81 percent. About half of the respondents in the middle of the spectrum – essentially libertarians to socially conservative fiscal liberals – said they were proud to be American. This isn’t just another eye-opening poll, however. What Pew has found is critically important for the direction of this country. As Fox News’ Chris Stirewalt asks: “how do you unite people to save the country if they’re not invested in its success?”

I heard about this poll……and what’s interesting is that while for decades conservatives have been the most likely group to be proud of America, I think that’s shifting. I for one would probably say “no” today - because America today has almost no resemblance to the country I have been proud of most of my life.

The education system has been penetrated by the left. They don’t have their own kids and thus must train the children of others to follow their deathest philosophy.

I am unwaveringly and staunchly proud of the America in which I grew up.

Today’s America? This country under Obama, with massive influxes of illegal aliens, constant bickering and maneuvering to take the rights of others in order to further the perceived rights of outsiders, perverts and America-hating third world immigrants here to rape this country?

Constant efforts to buy votes with entitlements and the coup-de-gras of a permanent 50 million strong throng of illegals who will be able to vote them in office for perpetuity?

Nope, not so much.

Even in power, they hate America.

All that's changed is the mask coming off.

Used to be proud is closest to my present feeling because of what the country is becoming. But still proud of what this country was founded upon and what it, as a nation and a people, has accomplished before its present, and apparently inexorable, decline.

I agree. When U.S. embassies are flying the gay pride flag instead of the American flag, there isn’t much left to be proud of.

And don’t forget the current scourge of promoting fag marriage and degenerate queer lifestyle choices like it is perfectly normal. That part of the new America I detest and will never accept and follow. That part of America needs to be destroyed.

Same here. I’ve been proud of my country for most of my 52 years. But, today’s America is a country of moochers, crony capitalists, homosexuals, criminals, and sluts. Whenever someone with traditional values tries to speak up, they are shouted down as being “mean” or a “hater”.

And now the Republican party has officially taken a stand against Americans with traditional values. I honestly wish that the socialists who run our nation would change the flag so I don’t have to see the stars and stripes desecrated by being on stage with our politicians or being used as a prop to signal the beginning of the opening festivities at a football game.

I’m not sure why we have a congress. Seems like a big waste of money when we already have a king.

Today’s America?

My America right or wrong (left), when right to be kept right and when wrong (left) to be made right.

It becomes difficult to remain proud of America when the president views my nation as flawed and in need of transformation.

Learning how the president developed his notion that he could improve on nature's laws is an exercise that many haven't taken.

Change as a means of improvement is noble but change just for the sake of change is misguided.

To my mind, the president has not offered any meaningful improvement to the founder's vision for a free America.

“I for one would not be opposed to having the 44 percent who aren’t proud to be American move to Costa Rica, or anywhere else for that matter. Despite the gridlock, scandals, and crises this country is currently facing, we are still the greatest nation on earth, period.”

They won’t need to move to Costa Rica, our southwestern states will soon be open for them. Then again I bet most of them are already there.
