A 17-year-old boy has been sentenced to 23 years behind bars for fatally shooting a retired police dog during a burglary. Ivins Rosier was convicted in May for breaking into the Florida home of a trooper and shooting the officer's five-year-old German Shepherd two years ago. Drake, a former drug-sniffing dog, was euthanized five days later. Rosier, who was 16 at the time of the incident but tried as an adult, was sentenced on Friday on charges of animal cruelty, armed burglary and shooting into an occupied building.Palm Beach Post reported Circuit Judge Robin Rosenberg said she handed Rosier a tough sentence as she was bound by sentencing guidelines. According to police, Rosier was one of three teens who broke into Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Robert Boody's home on November 18, 2012. Rosier, who had a history of run-ins with the police, is the first to be tried, according to Palm Beach Post. Sun Sentinel reported that Rosier confessed to police he was the one who shot the dog. During the two-day trial, patrol officer Boody cried as he told the court about returning home from work to find Drake, who he adopted in 2010, wounded. Drake suffered broken limbs, bullet wounds in his head and jaw, massive blood loss and lethal damage to his esophagus.

Now if the courts would only apply the same sentencing to dog killing cops.

I bet PETA is happy. Just think of the implications of this if animals (and I know this is a police dog who should be protection above other animals) who are killed are this protected. How many times have we seen people get much lessor sentences for killing people? I think this will be overturned. If not hunters may be in trouble someday.

Yeah ... I have mixed thoughts about this one.

Good a punk kid was caught, tried and sentenced, but 23 years seems a bit much.

The apparent factor of weight seems to have been the shooting of a dog that happens to have been a retired K9, which, in and of itself is worth something, but cops never pay for THEIR murders.

I’m glad he got such a sentence, but it won’t stand...

I’m sure we will read of him getting out in two or three years.

Indeed.

I’m okay with this too. Burglary? I don’t need to hear much more than that, but hurting the dog? Yep. I wouldn’t care if they executed him.

They mention his earlier “run-ins” but since he would have been a juvenile at the time, they don’t give any details - but I bet he had already done some pretty bad stuff. And if he broke into the trooper’s house, armed and with two other thugs, he wasn’t just some innocent “boy” who somehow happened to shoot some elderly dog.

Sounds like animal cruelty was only one of the three charges in this case. I wouldn’t lose any sleep over this. The guy should get 23 years for armed burglary alone, considering the fact that he’s apparently got a long record of run-ins with the law.

Florida has tough laws against criminals who use guns during their crimes. Combine that with relatively good gun rights for the law abiding, and the good guys have a distinct advantage.

That headline is a misstatement. His sentence would have been the same if he only maimed the dog. Discharge of a firearm during a burglary should be good for 10 by itself.

Wonderful news, think of him getting to playing “drop the soap” as the catcher for the next 20 years AND he is off the streets.

That went through the judicial process and the civil cases never went anywhere. It’s too bad the deceased was carrying while under the influence of drugs.

I believe the law is 10-20-life, and the 20 would apply in this case.
