Authorities were responding Wednesday morning to a possible building explosion in uptown New York City, according to multiple reports.

A detective told CNN that at least one person had died and the FDNY added that there were aware of 11 minor injuries at this time. According to the New York Times, authorities were also responding of people trapped below the ruble.

It was not clear what caused the explosion, but law enforcement officials told CNN that they are not seeing any connection to terrorism at the moment.

CNN reported that Con Edison was called moments before the explosion to stop a gas leak. Officials from the company had not yet arrived on scene when the explosion occurred.

This is a breaking news story.

While we always feel bad for those who are experiencing fire, this appears to be more NYC navel-gazing. I’m betting there are other fires in America, but because it’s NYC, their local news becomes our national news.

San Francisco Fire Rages At Construction Site Next To Giants’ AT&T Park

San Francisco fire in Mission Bay
A six-alarm fire in San Francisco has engulfed a construction site near AT&T Park, the home of the city’s baseball team, the Giants.

Over 100 firefighters responded to the emergency call at 4:56 pm, local time at the site in the city’s Mission Bay neighborhood on Tuesday afternoon, according to a San Francisco fire department official.

The official indicated that even though no injuries have been reported at this time, evacuations were ordered for buildings located across the street.

Do they have to get USEPA/NYSDEC pollution permits after the fact?

Since it’s NYC, my guess until further information will be natural gas leak.

Under this administration nothing resembling acts of terrorism will ever be called terrorism unless there are witnesses

” I smell gas! Call Con Edison to have it turned off!”

“Sure. right after I light up my cigarette.”

NYC has the scars to show for its being the #1 terrorism target in the world. Forgive them if they’re a bit jumpy about such things.

Looks like at least a dozen homes (that is, apartments) were demolished, and any gas leak causing the razing of a dozen homes in the country would get coverage.

And, of course, there were, sadly, deaths in this explosion.

I watched all networks cover a traffic jam on a bridge a few years back.

Like the rest of America doesn’t have traffic jams.

I heard the size of this building on Fox News: 25 ft wide and 90 feet deep.

Local News becomes national news, and a fire is raging in many places.

Manhattan is a very complicated organism. Lots of buildings have (free) steam heat that’s generated centrally.

DeBlasio is an experiment in replacing competent, experienced people with community organizers and terrorists.

This is either a steam pipe or a gas leak.

That sure doesn’t look like Uptown New York, to me.

120 feet of gas pipe was installed last June.
One big pipe bomb.

NYC has practically as much population as your state of Ohio has in total (8M to 11M), If three-quarters of the state of Ohio were caught in a traffic jam, it would make the news.

If you want to talk about something silly, look at how a dusting of snow is covered in DC.

Local news isn’t local news only because it’s localized. It’s local news because it doesn’t rise to the level of everyone gaining something by knowing about it.

Knowing about a 5 alarm fire in Cincinnati, my home town, is of little benefit to me. So, knowing about a 5 alarm fire in NYC is just a waste of my time.

It is an example of NY media going into their navel-gazing act.

Why don’t you just pop over to another thread instead of wasting your time on this one?

I answered a ping.

This morning after being treated to a coupla hours of NYC local news on Fox, commenting on this thread was a bit of venting.

There isn’t anything that changes the fact, though: NYC media thinks the world is interested in NYC’s local news.

Few other details were immediately available as authorities continued to investigate the fire’s cause.

Didn’t realize Marietta was a global terrorism target—or that a rail that supports 300,000 daily commuters was knocked out of commission in GA.

How often does Fox cover a single grizzly murder that affects a family and neighborhood at most?

There will probably be double-digit fatalities. When is that not big news? The fact that NYC has been attacked by terrorists more than anyone else also makes explosions here big news.
