Lincoln view the USA as an empire not a republic. He also wanted to keep the territories for "free white men".

Have we no interest in the free Territories of the United States — that they should be kept open for the homes of free white people? As our Northern States are growing more and more in wealth and population, we are continually in want of an outlet, through which it may pass out to enrich our country. In this we have an interest — a deep and abiding interest. There is another thing, and that is the mature knowledge we have — the greatest interest of all. It is the doctrine, that the people are to be driven from the maxims of our free Government, that despises the spirit which for eighty years has celebrated the anniversary of our national independence.

We are a great empire. We are eighty years old. We stand at once the wonder and admiration of the whole world, and we must enquire what it is that has given us much prosperity, and we shall understand that to give up that one thing, would be to give up all future prosperity.

Speech at Kalamazoo, Michigan, August 27, 1856

Yup Jersey and my ancestor spent the war as a medical orderly in Washington DC helping to to put back together those maimed by Confederate mini balls and shrapnel. When things get really bad here? Um, I haven't seen any slave auctions here abouts have you? As far as Obama? I don't see the point in Balkanizing the country to get him out of office. I'm for hanging his ass from a sour apple tree right now.

Perhaps I need better research skills, but I was not able to come up with any specific taxes or tariffs, and the years they were passed, which support the claim that the South was victimized in this way, or that the any huge percentage of federal revenue was coming from the cotton.

Not sure this answers your question, but here is a handy graphic showing where tariffs were collected.

I'd also point out that tariff rates at the outbreak of secession were at the lowest level in history at that point.

Better for the South. The North, without the South, would be completely communist by now.

Don't know about that. Looks to me that the old confederacy was pretty wild about the first Big Government socialist presidents. Looks to me like they loved 'progressive" big government.

Are you trying to say that the South is less progressive than the North now? Even you are not that stupid. The most Conservative region in the country is the South followed closely by the Mid West.

In the early 1900's the South was still anti Lincoln and anti Republican. I am sure Wilson, being born in the South, influenced the vote.

Then you are saying the South was stupid! Voting for big government progressives Wilson and Roosevelt even though they didn’t want big government?

There seems to be a precedent for that. Isn't one of the common Southern claims that Lincoln tricked them into firing first at Fort Sumter?

There was no way a Democratic southerner was going to vote Republican in the decades after the Civil War. This tradition was passed on generation to generation and only recently has that paradigm changed. I don't think they were stupid, it's like the Conservatives now, we get candidates that are RINO's and have little choice.

the only one mouthing off is you. I didn’t call all Southern Freepers Dixiecrats. I’m talking about the Johnny Reb wannabes like you.

Now you're just lying through your teeth and ratcheting up the insults. This is precisely what you said at post 108:

The South was Democrat and any Southerner today who calls himself a conservative is a Dixiecrat in sheep's clothing.

That's a blanket insult of every Southern conservative on this forum. It was a stupid thing to say. If you had an ounce of dignity, you'd apologize and retract it.

So it was multi generational stupidity.

LOL!! The whole point of the Dixiecrats in creating the Ku Klux Klan, besides the wanton murder of blacks( and Jews and Catholics) was to prevent blacks from voting. If the Dixiecrats were sure that blacks would vote Democrat than the Klan, if it had existed at all would have been little more than a bunch of local yahoo's with nothing to do on a Saturday night. The Dixiecrats knew damn well blacks weren't going to be voting Democrat. After all Fredrick Douglas was a Republican.
