U.S. Immigration Policy Leaves Behind 'Orphans Of Deportation

Some 4.5 million American citizens have at least one undocumented parent, according to estimates by the Pew Hispanic Center.

This has led to a growing number of children in the U.S. who are living without their parents. That’s because the number of deportations under the Obama administration has reached record levels — 400,000 in 2012 alone — and many of those deported are parents.

Latino communities across the country have borne the brunt of these deportations, and researchers say children’s mental health suffers as a result.

‘I Seriously Just Wanted To Die’

Brian Tapia of Bend, Oregon was 19 when his mother left.

“When it happened at first, I used to cry all the time. Every night. Usually in the bathroom, taking a shower. I used to cry there. That was the only time I had time to,” he said.

Brian’s sister, Karleen, was 11.

“I slept with her like the whole entire week because I knew she wasn’t going to be with us anymore. And it was going to be my first day of middle school, so like, I didn’t want her to be gone,” she said.

Brian’s and Karleen’s sister, Ashley, was 15.

“I didn’t want to say bye to her, because that’s how I am. I don’t like showing my feelings, so I just said, “Bye,” and I went upstairs, and I seriously just wanted to die,” she said.

‘Orphans Of Deportation’

Brian, Karleen and Ashley are what Luis Zayas calls “orphans of deportation.” A psychiatry professor at the University of Texas, Austin, Zayas studies the effect of parental deportation on kids who are U.S. citizens.

Lots of children are left parent-less because of our ridiculous Drug policies in this country. Should we have more sob stories about our criminal class.

I actually have more sympathy for our citizens who are in prison for drug possession

Like the unemployment rate, the Obama administration has changed the definition of deportation. It used to be that a person stopped at the border and turned back was considered an interdiction. They are all included in the numbers of the deported. That has pumped up the numbers.

OK lets cut to the chase...

What we have here is a lot of neglect and deserting of children by their illegal alien parents...

What decent parent leaves town and doesn’t take their children ???

Two illegal aliens do not produce a U.S. citizen. When mom and/or pop gets deported, their kids should be deported too. That way the American taxpayers won’t have to foot the bill to hire “teachers” (programmers) who speak Spanish and then have to pay them to teach the Mexican language, culture and history to foreigners’ kids going to school in America who are supposed to be Americans. It’s bull**** that Americans have had to give up OUR culture, OUR history and OUR way of life because it might offend the garbage who have come to this country illegally. OUR AMERICAN children should be allowed to learn about OUR culture, OUR history and OUR traditions. If the foreigners don’t like it, they can kiss our ***. American kids should be taught to be Americans. Everything else is bull****.

We need to revisit the 14th Amendment and establish that, since are not “...subject to the jurisdiction thereof” that their children are NOT citizens...
Then we can pitch the kids out, too.

Editor’s Note: Jordana Gustafson is a reporter for Oregon Public Broadcasting. She filed this two-part series as part of a fellowship with the Institute for Justice and Journalism. On Friday, in part two of this series, we’ll visit the children’s mother in Tijuana, Mexico.

Yes this is a liberal sob piece.

I am a bleeding heart for orphans but these are not orphans. They are abandoned and my heart still bleeds for that but I know that here in the Pacific Northwest there are many many charitable organizations that give til it hurts and they can help these children very well. If they do some chores and study they can in a few years be very productive and have the means to visit the family in Mexico often.

As a conservative I am not going to lose sleep over these children because I know they will be well looked after and because at issue is the law breaking and the vote fraud that I know from first hand experience that Mexicans think nothing of.

The eldest can easily work and save enough to visit the mother in Tijuana and can even buy a car and drive all the children for a visit. The younger children presumably US Citizens can even stay in Tijuana to be with the mother and be able to return later.

The saddest part of this type of story is how these Mexicans are used as tools by leftist groups like La Raza. It is just not worth it to see our votes negated by illegal voters and to see census statistics inflated by self-reporting numbers for political gerrymandering. The leftist Latino advocacy groups know every trick in the book to game the system and they have no moral conscience about breaking the law because in their minds, similar to how criminals think, the laws are unjust and do not apply to them or they were violated in some way and they will not allow the law to stop them from having revenge.

We need to revisit the 14th Amendment and establish that, since are not “...subject to the jurisdiction thereof” that their children are NOT citizens...

There was a time that when foreigners were here on a visitor's visa and gave birth (and even now, in the diplomatic corps) that they were told to either register their children on their passport (if their home country followed said system) or get the child a passport of their own.

That was before it was discovered that they would overwhelmingly be future Democrat voters.

“Some 4.5 million American citizens have at least one undocumented parent...”

I think that number is exceptionally understated. Just go to any major urban area and ask the first kid you see: “Who’s your daddy?” and the answer will probably be: “I dunno” ... thus an undocumented parent.
