Congratulations on your upcoming graduation. I’m sure you’ve worked very hard to get to this point. I shouldn’t have said the rest of her group was “dumb” but all these years of seeing her do all the work doesn’t leave me with a lot of sympathy. Hopefully their next meeting will go better.

Of course I’m biased, but I was happy she has her first co-op job offer, starting this next summer, apartment allowance, nice pay, 401K, health insurance (although I’m concerned about accepting that and messing up having her on ours, will have to look into that). Between a summer, Fall & Spring co-op salaries, her internship salary summer of 11th & 12th grade, and all her leftover college money we saved due to her earning full tuition scholarships, she should eventually graduate with quite a nice bank account . . . IF she doesn’t stumble.

I do worry. She was home this weekend for the first time this semester (busy in marching band too at games on weekends) . . . she says THREE students in her MatLab class have committed suicide so far this semester. I was SHOCKED. I know kids today are under a LOT OF PRESSURE, and so many write-off our younger generation but that is so sad. Her boyfriend who is attending the rivalry school in our state, had to come home last weekend to attend the funeral of one who committed suicide at yet another top university in our state . . . he was a National Merit Finalist and just graduated high school last May.

I’ve told my daughter, given the past 5 years and 3 more years to go with this affirmative action pResident, that IF you want to keep going to school, we’re fine with it and will support you 100% for advanced degree(s).

I am sick of seeing....

I'd like to know where people get the idea that it's OK to wear - untucked T-shirts, shorts, flip-flops, and enough facial piercings so that they look like they fell face-first into a tackle box - to a professional interview. Especially, for a white-collar, forward-facing job like a help desk role.

Seen all of them, in varied combinations.

One guy (T-shirt, flip-flops, shorts) tried to bluff his way through me by mentioning the CEO by name and telling me that the CEO had recommended that he "TAKE" the position.

Knowing that the CEO had been, and still was, out of the country (and knowing both he and his assistant well enough to do this) ..... I reached for the phone and said "Great! Let's give him a call and see if he wants to sit in on the interview!"

Guy jumped up and ran out of the room. Never heard from him again. Classic.

This was a foundry.....with out eyes or a nose you could tell what it was, so he knew, hubris sir hubris was his forte.

And there's the part I didn't know. Getting dirty in a foundry? Who could have expected that? My blame shifts entirely to the delicate little prince who didn't want to get dirty.

UGG, I hate the dead fish handshakes, especially coupled with people who won't look me in the eye.

Time for the all too true joke.

How can you detect an extroverted computer programmer? He looks at your shoes rather than his own.

Once after a brutal blizzard I needed a small amount of plowing done.

The charge—$3.00 a MINUTE. It took 20 minutes and I gladly paid it.

Ever run a project with them?

The antithesis of team players and communicators. Oh, and they copy the code on to thumbdrives and walk out the door with it to boot.

Oh, and ZERO loyalty.

How many of them would schedule a trip for Friday on late Thursday afternoon? This trip would require them to leave at 6:30 AM and return home at 3 AM early Saturday morning.

Most of the younger people I know would balk at working past 6 PM on a Friday night and missing out a night with their friends. If they had to do the trip, they’d feel entitled to an expensive hotel and expense magazine reading for the flights.

More experienced people are willing to do these things on occasion because they know the dedication to management—the “team-playerness”—pays dividends beyond the hardship.

If we can keep all the “Gimme-Gimme” oldsters off of their backs, maybe they’ll have a chance. Two out of three of mine are no slackers. As for my third - well I gotta invoke the “meatloaf principle” - Two out of three ain’t bad.

A couple of years back we brought in an upcoming college grad for an interview on a job that pays $25-30K.

When we got to the salary requirements he pulled out a magazine article showing 2011 college grads avg. salary of $45K and demanded that.

Thanks, we’ll be in touch.....
