Internal poll shows Sen. Lamar Alexander in strong position

Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) starts his 2014 primary campaign in a dominant position, with 69 percent of Tennessee Republicans approving of his job performance, according to a poll conducted for his campaign.

The poll, from Whit Ayres and North Star Opinion Research, shows Alexander leading just-announced opponent and state Rep. Joe Carr, 64 percent to 22 percent. He also leads another potential opponent, Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett, 62 percent to 23 percent. Alexander’s approval rating is 58 percent among “very conservative” voters and 57 percent among tea partiers.

Of the 69 percent of Republicans who view him favorably, 25 percent strongly approve of him. That’s twice the number who strongly disapprove of him (12 percent) — numbers that suggest there is not a large and organic anti-Alexander movement in the Republican Party.

Despite this poll, the people of Tennessee will be watching your every move, Lamar. You won't be Tennessee Waltzing back into office unopposed!

It looks like Lamar Alexander is vulnerable and needs to reassure his donors.

Lamar Alexander is an ineffective establishment type, and a liberal Republican which is never a good thing in Tennessee. He can be easily beaten.

My prediction is this guy is toast like Libby Dole was in NC. We better replace him in the primary with a better candidate to have a chance in the general election.

Just remember, Tennessee: RINO Love involves a lot of stomping, snorting, thick wrinkly hide and bad breath. And you will always be gored by a big pointy horn in the end.

I think Carr will go up from here.

Just saying.

I think so too. This is the usual tactic. We saw it with Enzi and we just saw it with McConnell. They intitiate these polls to shore up their own positions and to undermine their opponents.

Much of that 65% are democrats that love their progressive Senator... but maybe there are enough Conservatives to deny him in the primary.

He’s s democrat handmaiden, gives them a vote when they need it. And as a moderate, he will be easy to take out when need be. As Ted Stevens was, and Conrad Burns, and Lincoln Chafee, and Mike Dewine etc.

It’s an easy transtion from a moderate republican to a democrat.

I’ve been hearing Alexander’s ads on the radio and they make me puke. After funding Obamacare he claims to be against it. I hope fellow Tennesseans don’t fall for this liberal’s lie that he’s a Conservative.

Well I pray that enough people are sick of their dim overlords to stop the march towards communism.

I will NOT vote for Lamar. I live in TN and if he is the nominee, I will not be voting.

“I will NOT vote for Lamar. I live in TN and if he is the nominee, I will not be voting.”

I felt the same way about Scott Brown. And last November I left that office on my ballot blank. And he is now gone from power. And good riddance! We don’t have to keep voting for these worthless people just because they’re thrust upon us from the powers that be.
