Leaving California! (VANITY)
Lilyramone

Posted on 07/14/2013 9:00:38 AM PDT by lilyramone

Sorry for the vanity post but I am just so excited to announce that my husband accepted a promotion in West Texas and we will be leaving liberal California at the end of August. God answered our prayers! We have been trying to leave for almost a year. My amazing husband leaves in nine days and the kids and I follow in a month. My seven year old asked if in Texas they wear their baseball caps the right way....enough said!

You only wear the hat backward when it interferes with the scope on your rifle.

I grew up in Odessa and now live in Fort Worth. The one thing I miss about west Texas is the dry climate. It can be 115 degrees outside, but there would still be a nice breeze to cool off. Not so in the humidity of north Texas. And the sunsets - of which you can quickly find a place for a 360 view — are amazing!
If not living in Odessa or within thirty miles, Lubbock would be the next closest large city. If you don’t need a big city to live in, consider finding a home in Fort Stockton to the southwest of Odessa. Or any getting closer to Big Bend.
I used to say that Odessa was the perfect place to live. Anything you want to do is only 300 miles away! 300 mi to Dallas; 300 mi to Ruidoso for snow skiing; 300 mi to San Antonio or Austin for some lakes and fishing. That part of the country is sure flat! And if you stand on a tuna fish can, you can see an extra 100 miles!

Or when driving a bass boat. LOL

I tell my grandsons that you lose 20 IQ points when you put your baseball hat on backwards.

Welcome to the club, Lily. I moved my family and our business from California to Texas about eight years ago. It was one of the best decisions my wife and I have ever made, though it took a few years for us to fully appreciate just how wise a choice that was.

I’ll tell you another thing....I haven’t been homesick a single day since we left. I’ve found Texas to be everything that my home state used to be.

“I would not be surprised in the future, CA enacts an “Exit Tax” to those leaving CA. “

Do not think that this is unthinkable. I can think of all sorts of ways that the liberal mind could justify it.

Don’t let the first sandstorm dissuade you. They do end.
Goatheads (stickers), horned toads. They take some getting used to.

Goatheads and stickers (grasspurs) aren't the same thing- goatheads grow low to the ground, and the pointy parts are bigger, so they hurt more going in, but not so much coming out, as they aren't barbed (you are also less likely to get one stuck into your finger when pulling it out, as there are only the two points). Grasspurs (stickers) grow in an unpredictable manner- they can be low to the ground, or impressively huge- they grow in bunches on the end of multiple stalks, and have barbed points all over. Very unpleasant, and they thrive in sandy, well drained soil (which describes my yard- the only way to control them is to have a fenced yard and dig them up relentlessly when they appear).

Horned toads (we call them "horny toads") are completely harmless to human beings, and are very cool to see. They have been reduced in numbers in recent years, as the influx of fire ants has been killing off their food supply. If you see one, it's okay to catch it (they can be rendered temporarily paralyzed by turning them over and rubbing their belly gently with a finger- yes, it's true :), but please release it unharmed, in a safe area!

Oh, and welcome back to Texas- since you've spent time here, you should be immune from the usual "That's not how we do in California!" state of mind.

I homeschool my kids. The creepy California LGBT schooling laws, new stupid “gender identity” rights and the other 1000 public school problems had us pull them out after my son was in Kindergarten for only 3 months.

You too?

We pulled our eldest out of kindergarten in the L.A. school system after his first semester and enrolled him in the charter school program. After some months of their dictatorial supervision, we opted out completely and began home schooling. That was twelve years ago. Our other three kids have never stepped foot on a public school campus.

I left the People's Republic of California in 2002. I continued to miss the beaches and mild winters several years, but nothing could persuade me to go back even on a vacation.

We left California for Texas in late 2005. I went back for a few days in 2010 for my dad's 80th birthday. Let me tell you, I hadn't remembered how creepy the place is. It was like being in a foreign country.

It was nice seeing my kin again, but I experienced a massive sense of relief when the wheels went up on the airplane home. When we finally touched down in Dallas, I wanted to kiss the ground.

Heh...my brother moved from Kalifornia to Chicago for a couple of years, and his way of describing the flatness was "If it's winter, and a dog craps just before a snow, the locals break out their skis"

We drove west through your area about four years ago, and ended up overnighting in poor little Pecos -- talk about a dying town.....but the local Chinese restaurant was so super, we still talk about it.

I live in the Texas hill country. It is a beautiful place to live. Also do business in west Texas, the people are great. I have done business in 44 states and traveled the country extensively. I decided to live here because I believe it is the best place in the country to live. In many other places, if you move there, you are considered an “outsider.” Not in Texas! You become a Texan by choice!

Great move ! We just relocated to Corpus Christi after fifteen years in Kansas City, and, as a California born and raised patriot, I am thrilled to be here and I miss the California of old. Texas has a great deal to offer your family.

Texas will be the largest state in the new nation when that time comes.

Just be careful who you tell that you’re from CA, and you’ll do fine.

Learned that a few years ago. You wont be picking up many Texas woman after telling them you are from California. Although, you can play the Texas is better then California meme. Just let them show you how better Texas is then California :>
