Gun Control: Senate Blocks Background Checks (Obama: "pretty shameful day for Washington")

Barack Obama has issued a scathing rebuke to the US Senate, calling it "shameful" after lawmakers rejected a bipartisan measure to expand the scope of background checks for gun buyers in the wake of the Sandy Hook school shootings.

Speaking at the White House, the president said the Senate members had decided it "wasn't worth it" to save children's lives through stricter gun control.

He also railed against the National Rifle Association, saying the gun lobby and its allies "willfully lied" to its constituents about the contents of the bill in order to defeat it.

"All in all this is a pretty shameful day for Washington," Mr Obama said.

Even though Wednesday's vote was on a bipartisan compromise, it fell short of the 60 votes it needed to pass the Senate.

Also speaking at the White House, Sandy Hook parent Mark Barden, who lost his son Daniel on December 14, said the bill's failure would not stop him and others from fighting for limits on firearms.....

Ha, what idiotic thing to say. This is a glorious day for America. The Bill of Rights has been protected, which in turn protects us from tyrants like obama and his ilk.

Bam-Bam is right.

It's beyond shameful ... it's an absolute disgrace and a complete outrage that these violations of the Constitution were even brought up for a vote. Shame on Harry Reid, Dianne Feinstein, Joe Manchin, and all the other disgraceful oath-breakers and enemies of the Constitution who wrote these bills.

Had Romney been in the Whitehouse, McCain and Graham would have had their way and this legislation would have passed in bi-partisan fashion.

Thank you.

All during the 2012 primary I tried to tell people that if we elected 'our' liberal, he'd be the de facto leader of the Republican party, and that they'd roll over for the same agenda he pushed in Massachusetts. The Dems would have gleefully joined in, as well.

With Obama in the White House, that natural alliance doesn't exist, therefore, there's at least some push-back against his agenda. With Romney in the White House, there would have been little, if any.

Sucks, but that is the dynamic we faced, and the one which is playing out now.

You are very welcome. I remember those threads well; we endured our share of slings and arrows, didn't we. I didn't cave and I trust you didn't either -- and nobody will ever thank people like us for it. But we helped the nation dodge a liberal bullet. Had Romney been president, today would have turned out very, very differently.

No, I never did cave, but after the first debate, Romney had me half convinced that just maybe he had some personal qualities that I'd prefer over the petulant, narcissistic, lunatic ideologue we have in the White House now.

That was a tough moment in time for all of us. We were stuck between the devil and the deep blue sea without a life raft. The whole event plagued my mind, and caused me endless stress, because I knew in my heart that if we propelled Romney into the White House, that he'd turn around and bend over backward to "reach across the aisle" to the Commies.

We Freeps would have been nearly suicidal after four years of his appeasement to the libs.

You know, Obama was really ticked off about this, which doesn’t surprise me. But you know what really pisses me off about this? When was the last time you saw a Republican act like this? When we come out on the short end of the stick, you hear nothing but quiet little whimpers from the Stupid Party.
