This is a little late, but still wacky. On his radio show March 15, Fox News host Geraldo Rivera thinks the Irish really ought to take God out of Saint Patrick's Day.
"Having been a participant in plenty of St. Patrick's Day celebrations, I just have to say that one of the last things on my mind [was] to venerate St. Patrick. God bless him and all he did, [but] I just don't believe the celebration, I think it's largely a secular celebration," he argued. "More like Mardi Gras, isn't it?"

At least Irish Americans got to keep their holiday. The Italian Americans lost Columbus Day as a source of pride in heritage.
Sadly, two of the most popular holidays are Halloween and Mardi Gras. That and the proliferation of the depiction of undead vampires and zombies in popular culture give a clue where America is going.
I agree with you. The only thing remotely Christian about it is “Saint”. Apart from that it is a green excuse to get drunk.
There isn’t a lot of context provided in the original post, but what was pointed out by Geraldo is accurate for the vast majority of the population. Most Americans do not venerate St. Patrick or God in any fashion on St. Patrick’s day and instead wear green, think about a few artifacts of Irish culture, and get smashed—a wholly secular pursuit if ever there was one.
For St. Patrick’s day this year, however, my family and I listened to a little more Irish music than usual, ate corned beef and cabbage and read the Confessions of St. Patrick at family devotions. So, like Christmas, the subject of the celebration is in the heart of the celebrator.
Yeah and Easter is about bunnies and chocolate, and Christmas is about presents and pine trees, and Lent is about 5k runs and dieting.

I met him in the early 1970s. He is a friend of a friend. And a total leftist jerk(that was the extremely mild version of the descriptive noun I wanted to use)
He was newly famous for uncovering abuse at the Willowbrook psychiatric center. My friends brother was a professor at the junior college I was attending and he brought him to the school to talk about the case.

Like Geraldo or not, that statement is quite accurate.
