Joe McCarthy was right all along

Most Europeans are unlikely to be familiar with the facts behind the American term “McCarthyism.” They probably know it describes something very bad in American politics—the “Communist witch hunts” of more than half a century ago. They may also know that simply uttering the term, like casting a spell, stops all debate cold by associating someone with the eponymous Joseph McCarthy. As the story goes, he was himself very bad. After all, he conducted those long ago “Communist witch hunts,” ruining his name in perpetuity. This probably exhausts general knowledge.

But here’s a secret: Most Americans know little more than this same familiar but completely false narrative. In recent years, stunning revelations from archives in Washington and Moscow have confirmed that McCarthy’s investigations—and those conducted by other officials before and after—netted not innocent and imaginary “witches,” but secret cadres of hardened Communist agents determined to bring down the American republic. Surely, this makes Joe McCarthy a great patriot and deserving “the plaudits of a grateful nation.” …

He did not ruin his name in perpetuity in my eyes. I have always held him and his name in very high esteem.

Evil follows in the footsteps of sinners regaled as saints. Witness the sinners of the Church hiding the sins of pedophilia while extolling the saints.

McCarthy correctly exposed Communists. He also engaged in stolen valor by lying about his military service. He lied. Do true conservatives lie, cheat, or steal? Do true conservatives excuse the perpetration of evil just so long as it serves their own political interests, or do conservatives recognize good and evil deeds whether or not it impacts their political interests?

West Point Cadet Honor Code: “A cadet will not lie, cheat, steal, or tolerate those who do.”

“They never investigated Hollywood. That was done by HUAC.”

Colter in “Demonic” relates that the NYT crossword had clue “McCarthy’s Committee.” with the four-letter answer HUAC.

When the error was pointed out, NYT responded (effectively) “so what — same thing”

I have no idea if he was a liar or not.

Just what did he claim to have done that he didn’t do?

Do some Internet searches to look at his falsifications of his military service and deecorations. Note how he eentered service as a commissioned officer due to his law degree, and how he was an intelligence officer who flew 12 missons as a rear gunner and observer. Then look at what he claimed instead. Also take note of the falsified commendation letter. Bottomline: Kerry copycatted McCarthy.

While you are at it, you may want to take a look at Chon, McCarthy’s assistant. Pay close attention to Cohn’s career back to his support of McCarthy.

He exaggerated his war record, but he did in fact fly 12 combat missions.

Ted NEVER was like his brothers Bobby and John. They had their issues, as anybody does, but they were loyal Americans. Teddy rose to power as the last survivor of the Kennedy brothers. He was for Teddy, and he could care less who he obtained power from. He was never half the man the others wer, so colluding with the enemy was no problem He had the Kennedy name and nobody messed with the Kennedy’s..

Joe “Tailgunner Joe” McCarthy was a proven liar claiming to have been a combat veteran, making it an early case of stolen honor.

It's true that McCarthy exaggerated his record, but he did, indeed, fly on combat missions.

It has been speculated due to these and a number of other factors that Joe McCarthy may have served as an agent provocateur specifically to create a public backlash against investigations against Communists and thereby shield against further actions being taken against Communists. If so, the ploy was highly successful to the point where no inquiries against Communism and its conspiracies to overthrow Constitutional government are allowed.

Who has made such speculations? McCarthy's efforts to raise awareness about Soviet espionage and policy sabotage, which began in 1950, resonated with much of the electorate. The investigations by his subcommittee, which began in 1953, were also popular with the public until the fiasco of the 1954 Army hearings, after which his popularity declined.

It also must be observed how McCarthy did himself and anti-communist resistance no favors with his alcoholism, fraud, stolen valor, and true demogoguery. He was correct in identifying many Communists. Nonetheless, the question must be asked, did McCarthy do more harm than good, and why?

If McCarthy was truly anti-communist, then why was he corrupt, and why did he harm the anti-communist investigations with his demogoguery? Was he just being rude, crude, and self-destructive because he was oblivious to the consequences of his actions?

Wow! You're out-McCarthying McCarthy

True, he embellished his resume, but he doesn't hold a candle to John Kerry in that department.

McCarthy could probably have skipped out on the war altogether had he wanted to, since he was well into his 30's when the war broke out, and serving as a judge. He gets kudos from me for serving in a hot zone and risking death, mutilation, or the horrors of a Japanese POW camp.
