"Every Man Should Carry a Pocket Knife"
artofmanliness.com ^ | Brett & Kate McKay

"1st Century Romans created the first folding pocket knife. They made for easy carrying for soldiers and other explorers on their journeys and conquests. However, as the use of sheathed knives became more popular, the use of pocket knives fell somewhat into disfavor......There are three common designs of pocket knives: the jack knife, the pen knife, and the multi-purpose knife. We’ll discuss the features and benefits of each one, in order to help you decide what kind of knife you should get.

A jack knife has a simple hinge at one end, and may have more than one blade. The jack knife is popular among hunters, fishermen, and campers.... A pen knife is hinged at both ends of the handle, and usually has two or three blades at each end. The pen knife was originally designed to cut or sharpen pen quills for writing. The pen knife is good if you want more than one type of blade. It’s also small and lightweight and won’t be noticeable in the pocket of dress clothes.....Multi-purpose knife. These are probably the most popular pocketknives. The Swiss Army knife and the Handyman are probably the most well known of the multi-purpose knives.....

I’ve usually got two and occasionally three, depending on which bag I’m carrying.

I carry a couple.

Also a big fan of AOM. Nice to see it linked on here. Good site. Reasonably good message board. Brett’s running a good show over there.

I've carried my Case XX since I was in short pants.

I did get in trouble once in school... for not having a pocket knife in shop class.

This thread made me actually look at it.. The emblem insert on the side is missing, it got run through a washer once too often.

The tip of the short blade has been broken (never loan a knife to a brother-in-law).

It's starting to look positively ancient. It's only 40-odd years old.

Since I am an authentic “jack pine savage”, I always have one, maybe more on my person. I do always change into the dress knife for church, however!

I still remember the present I got from my grandfather for earning my Boy Scout “toting chit”. It’s a Schrade Old Timer, and I still have it.

I still have my old Swiss army knife I got when I was eleven and in the Boy Scouts. It’s 30 years old, both blades are still sharp, though those edges have been dressed, and the only thing I lost from it was the toothpick, but the tweezers I still have.

Great knife!

I too have one from decades ago. I saw a little knife shop during a vacation a few years back and found a replacement toothpick.

I have many, but one of my favorites for 20 years was a Puma White Hunter which I lost several years ago after field dressing a deer. I thought about replacing it a while back and was a bit shocked at the price now. I like Buck knives—good Christian family founded this fine knife company.

Case XX front pocket, Buck lock blade back pocket.
One is for fun, one is for serious.

‘giant swiss army knife’...When I was 10 my Dad gave me a giant army knife he found in a pawn shop. It was literaly the size and shape of a large baked potato. There were over a hundred ‘blades’ (saws, spoon, fork, etc.). Never again have I seen one like it. I wish I still had it cause my friends don’t believe me....ha ha.

Yep, Spyderco is my favorite folding knife maker. Quality materials and construction. The Harpy is my favorite design. Very useful but also useful for self defense.

I also have an old Swiss army knife, a Gerber Flik multi tool, Cold Steel Gunsite, Kabar black fighting knife, SOG seal team elite, tactical tomahawk, and my collection of throwing knives which see heavy use.

I carry at least two - a single blade Schrade 5" for most rough work, and a Western pen knife which, because the Schrade handles the tough stuff, remains wicked-sharp. I have had that particular pen knife since I was a lad, and plan to have it till I die.

As soon as winter is on, and I am in my muks, I regularly carry a boot knife too, as coats, insulated bibs and such make it hard to access pockets... And since my pants are always inside the muks, the boot knife is easy to get to.

While not a pocketknife, the price ($14) & quality (excellent) of this mid-sized sheath knife make it an outstanding aquisition for oneself or for gifting to right-minded folk:

MoraKniv - Swedish steel, 3 7/8" carbon steel blade, 4oz

*no affiliation .. just a satisfied owner
