Add One More Thing to the List of ‘Things the Media Got Wrong About Newtown’
New York News & Features ^ | December 28, 2012 | Dan Amira

Edited on 12/28/2012 10:22:44 AM PST by Admin Moderator. [history]

In the hours and days following the Newtown massacre, the media reported a metric [edited] of what were later discovered to be incorrect details, including the identity of the shooter, his mom's connection to the school, where she was killed, how Adam Lanza got into the building, and the weapons he used. Now we can add another one to the list: Adam Lanza was not wearing body armor, but "a fishing type vest, a jacket with a lot of pockets," according to a Connecticut state police spokesman.

It's not exactly clear where the misinformation started, but ABC News reported on the day of the shooting that Lanza was "wearing a bulletproof vest," according to "sources," and Fox 5 News's Ti-Hua Cheng "cited a law enforcement source that Lanza came into the school wearing black clothing over a bullet proof vest."

The media's inadvertent spreading of false information about the Newtown shooting is hardly without precedent. As author Dave Cullen told On the Media last week, much of what we initially heard about the Columbine massacre was flawed, too. "Two loner, outcast goths from the Trenchcoat Mafia went on a revenge slaying where they targeted jocks specifically to pay them back for years of relentless bullying," Cullen recalled. "Everything that I just said is wrong." Nevertheless, Cullen notes that "everyone, almost, still believes" that original narrative, as well as other details of the rampage — such as the girl who was supposedly killed for believing in God — that were later disproved.

The irresponsible reporting by the media on the Sandy Hook massacre is deplorable. The media seems to have bent over backwards reporting myths as facts, most notably that Adam's mom worked at the school and that she loved those kids more than him so he got revenge. None of that is true. Or that there was an altercation at the school; That has yet to be proven and nothing more has been said about that.

If Adam's mother Nancy had plans to send him to a mental facility and he became enraged about that, why would he go to a school to massacre children? This makes no sense whatsoever.

I suppose the media will keep trying to throw motives for what he did at the wall until something sticks, but so far it appears the motive was to set the stage for a government-imposed gun ban or confiscation of our guns. If true, it appears this tragedy might be successful at doing just that.. Although unthinkable, the axiom "The ends justify the means" might well be in play here.

I suggest that the destruction of Adam's hard drive was done to protect the person or group which might have recruited Adam for this mission via electronic communication through his computer. Why else would he destroy his computer? It's not like he had a reputation to uphold.. He shattered that the moment he killed his own mother and innocent children so why was it imperative that he destroy his computer (if indeed it was him that did it)? Why the false motives and totally false information perpetrated by the media? To say Nancy was involved with the school when in fact she had no connection whatsoever is nothing short of pathetic journalism. The media seems to have a vested interest in fomenting anger against guns, behaving as a propaganda arm of the government to make gun bans a reality.

The media also hasn’t mentioned that the Bushmaster bought by Ms. Lanza is banned in CT and in NJ. If she took that to a range how come she got away with keeping a banned firearm? Someone should have seen it.

Well we can’t have accuracy and honesty, let alone facts get in the way of our hysteria driven agenda, now can we.

Because it wasn’t an AR-15.

And I'm not sure which type of firearm is being looked at in his trunk here, but I agree it might be a Remington shotgun:

Also, here's police scanner audio from that morning:

Are you sure about that? I think you can have an AR style rifle in CT, it just can’t have too many “evil features” like a flash hider, bayonet lug, barrel shroud, etc.

What was it then?

and would it have been on the ‘banned’ list, and thus subject to scrutiny at the local gun range?

I am not famous or infamous, but every single time I have been in a simple local news story, or personally knowledgeable about a news story, the media has gotten at least one fact wrong. Every time.

The rifle I saw being carried from the car by a policeman was a wooden stock long rifle with a scope on it. I took care to make note of it as he was carrying his weapon as well.

After the initial dump of one or two days of completely wrong information, there has been very little coming out of CT on Lanza.

There is something going on but I suggest a cover-up more than a conspiracy. A cover-up that might hurt gun control efforts.

CT's Assault Weapon Law is the same law that DiFi wants to push on the rest of us. No possession unless it was certified by police as possessed prior to July 1993. Cannot be transferred to anyone other than a licenced dealer.

Anything with the name "Bushmaster" on it is on the no-no list, regardless of evil features. Here's a summary of CT's law from the NRA-ILA:

“ASSAULT WEAPONS”
No person shall possess any “assault weapon” unless that person possessed that firearm before October 1, 1993 and received a certificate of possession from the Connecticut State Police prior to July 1994. The commissioner of public safety shall maintain a file of all certificates of transfer at the central office.

No assault weapon may be sold or transferred to any person other than to a licensed gun dealer, or any individual who arranged in advance to relinquish it to a police department or the department of public safety, or by bequest or intestate succession. Any person who obtains title to an assault weapon for which a certificate of possession has been issued by bequest or intestate succession shall, within 90 days of obtaining title, apply to the department of public safety for a certificate of possession, render the weapon inoperable, sell the weapon to a licensed gun dealer, or remove the weapon from the state. Any person who moves into the state in lawful possession of an assault weapon shall, within 90 days, either render it permanently inoperable, sell it to a licensed gun dealer, or remove it from the state.

A person who has been issued a certificate of possession of an assault weapon may possess it only under the following conditions:
•At the person’s residence, place of business or other property owned by that person, or on property owned by another with the owner’s express permission;
•While on the premises of a target range of a public or private club or organization organized for the purpose of practicing shooting at targets;
•While on a target range which holds a regulatory or business license for the purpose of practicing shooting at that target range;
•While on the premises of a licensed shooting club;
•While attending any exhibition, display or educational project which is about firearms and which is sponsored by, conducted under the auspices of, or approved by a law enforcement agency or a nationally or state recognized entity that fosters proficiency in, or promotes education about, firearms; or
•While transporting the assault weapon between any of the places mentioned above, or to any licensed gun dealer, for servicing or repair, provided the assault weapon is unloaded, kept in the trunk of such vehicle or in a case or other container which is inaccessible to the operator of or any passenger in such vehicle.

The theft of a lawfully possessed assault weapon must be reported to the police within 72 hours of discovery.

An “Assault Weapon” is defined as: Any selective-fire firearm capable of fully automatic, semiautomatic or burst fire at the option of the user or any of the following specified semiautomatic firearms:

•A shroud that is attached to, or partially or completely encircles, the barrel and that permits the shooter to hold the firearm with the nontrigger hand without being burned;
•A manufactured weight of fifty ounces or more when the pistol is unloaded; and
•A semiautomatic version of an automatic firearm; or
•A semiautomatic shotgun that has at least two of the following:
•A folding or telescoping stock;

•A fixed magazine capacity in excess of five rounds; and
•An ability to accept a detachable magazine; or
•A part or combination of parts designed or intended to convert a firearm into an assault weapon, or any combination of parts from which an assault weapon may be rapidly assembled if those parts are in the possession or under the control of the same person.

The term “assault weapon” does not include any firearm modified to render it permanently inoperable.

I remember that day. Where I work we have several TVs through the building all on different news channels. Depending on where you were in the building, people had totally different information on what was happening. Were there 2 shooters or 1, was an accomplice in the woods scoping out the school, his mom was a teacher at the school….goes on and on. Our media is terrible.

Are you telling us the media was wrong? I noticed the examiner crawfished on the wounds on the other victims.

CT does indeed ban those rabid butt ugly rifles that seem to go on killing sprees. BTW, if she owned it legally it wasn’t an assault weapon as defined by CT. Freepers need to investigate this.

Correction: You may inherit a previously certified pre-1993 Assault Weapon, but you may not sell it to anyone other than an FFL. DiFi would ban all transfers, including by bequeath.

Has anyone seen any additional information about the reported alleged disagreement that Lanza had with 4 male Sandy Hook school employees the day prior to the shooting? Was that information accurate? Supposedly he killed 3 of those employees, but one was not at the school on the day of the shooting. He, obviously, would know what what went on and could shed light on why this may have happened.

Same here. I’ve had a couple times in my life where I was there or had first hand knowledge of something. What was reported by the media was nowhere near what actually happened.

actually there was a girl shot (but survived) after she said she believed in God at Columbine.

It wasn’t the two protestant girls who were claimed by many to have said it, though, but another girl, a Catholic, in a different location who was praying and the shooters taunted her if she believed in God and she said she did, so they shot her with a shotgun...

Since she was in ICU when the story came out, no one identified her as the girl...and she verified the story when she recovered, but didn’t go around bragging about it...and by the time her story came out, the press was busy trying to debunk the first story and ridicule Christians they didn’t bother to print the real story. The press also didn’t print that the videos of the killers stated they hated Christians and even named one of the girls who they later shot, because she was Christian.
