We stayed at Surf City on Topsail Island the last two years for our vacation (week of Labor Day). We liked it a lot, but we’ll probably go to Garden City, just south of Myrtle Beach, next year, because my mother-in-law lives there. We’ve been there twice before, and prices for oceanfront houses are in our reach if we go in September!

Next week we’re going to Lake Norman, near Charlotte, because we wanted to avoid a long drive with a baby, as well as saving money. Our 18-year-old son goes to community college here, so he’ll stay home with the pets.

Some corrections, not that it matters to most:

Hawaii

Cons: vulnerable to tsunamis, very high cost of living, volcanoes, traffic, high population density, high taxes

All of the cons are "it depends". Tsunamis an issue only if you live below 100' elevation and close to shore. No income tax on retirement. Outer islands are not crowded at all, only Oahu. Same with traffic. Cost of living is somewhat offset by other factors only locals know about. Easterners should stay far away, not wanted.

michigan pros: best lakes in the country, hardwood forests. mild, comfortable summers, low population in the north, low crime in the north, beautiful falls, inexpensive housing.
cons: tourist trade, long winters, cold winters, short on cultural activities.

texas pros: rodeos, music, reasonable housing prices, no salt damage to vehicles. canton! BBQ!
cons: spanish is practically first language.

also...if we’re talking about the best place to hunker down during a doomsday scenerio its got to be northern michigan. the worlds largest supply of fresh water. creeks and lakes everywhere...fertile farm land...plenty of hardwoods for firewood and plenty of wild life and fish for food also apples, cherry, peaches abound. Plus the whole place is secure from three sides.

I haven’t been down to Lost Nations in ages but I grew up in that area in Hanover. Now I live in the southeast corner of the county near Napoleon. I took the photo just outside of town.

Absolutely! Surf City! I think last time we stayed at North Topsail, but we always rent the beaters right on the beach so it is still within a reasonable range.

Much the same where I live. Several local families have been here as long as mine. Well over 100 years. Some of those same families moved from AL to TX during Reconstruction and migrated later here.

Neighbors still help neighbors here too.

Whoever wrote this doesn’t seem to recognize that each state has a lot of diversity within its borders. There are probably A through F regions in each state. In every state where I have lived, there are great places to live and lousy places to live. I have lived in Idaho and I completely agree that the Panhandle as nice a place as there is in the country. On the other hand, there are parts of the state where I wouldn’t condemn my worst enemy to live.

No amount of regional greatness can overcome California’s structural problems. The rich areas are full of liberals and the other areas are full of illegals.

I was born and raised there and only just moved to Texas. I have been all over the state. I know of what I speak.

We do have to worry about the whole state becoming Austinized. I hear that is happening to Nevada.

But I brought a 6-figure income and Conservative values. I had to petition for the “Really, I ain’t one of Them” exemption. The review board was TOUGH.

The most painful part was AFTER they agreed to let me in and stapled the “Cowboys #1” foam finger to my forehead.

Actually...a very good list.

I think you got a lot of states accurately ranked and rated

I would give the Dakotas an “A”...esp South Dakota...which is quite rolling and hilly/mountainous in the western part. Also S DAK has no state income tax

As a Floridian that is one of the places I am considering retiring to. Florida is no fun 8 months of the year with high humidity. In my travels I find that the colder climes are better.....you can put more clothes on in the winter....but you can only take off so many in Florida in summer

Also, Florida is becoming more “diverse”....meaning “anti-white”. I do not want to grow old in a place where my race would affect my living standard...I do not want to become another George Zimmerman

I’ve been to Idaho and it is a nice state...deserves an “A”. And, Boise is a high-tech town that does well economically....a few people from where I live in FL have left for Boise for work
