CELINA
A Mercer County K-9 unit died Wednesday after his handler left him in a patrol car.
This sure is happening a lot these day. What are these morons thinking? If you’re hot, it’s a pretty good chance that your dog is hot too! Geeesh! It’s not rocket science.
Again? I thought the K-9 officers treated the animals like constant companions and fellow officers.
Hope those were really good doughnuts!
If Deputy Sheriff Chad Fortkamp is not charged with animal abuse due to the death of his K-9, considered an LEO in a Court of Law, there is something deeply wrong in the Mercer County Sheriff Department.
He wasn’t a “unit.” He was a highly intelligent, sensitive, loving creature.

I live in a cold climate and the K-9 officers around here have specially configured cars so they can leave them running with the a/c on.
This happens a lot. If a cop is too stupid to take care of a dog, he shouldn’t be a cop.
The police union will protect the officer. Probably will get a promotion over this.
Exactly.Too stupid to care for a dog, then way too stupid to carry a gun.
Wow, cop killer and dog killing cop all in one.
Geez, the dogs they shoot die with less pain than this poor dog.
This is off topic, but has anyone here ever tasted Celina water? It has GOTTA be the most shitty drinking water anywhere! It even smells as bad as it tastes. My Gramma used to make cookies, and they even tasted like it.
That officer is a f@**king idiot, period. Deserves to be fired, and tossed in jail for negligent homicide of a fellow officer. Civilian criminals get a felony murder charge for killing a police dog. He ought to get at least negligent homicide, that’s his damn partner and one that is 100% dependent on him.
Nail the asshole to the wall.
“this happens a lot. If a cop is too stupid to take care of a dog, he shouldnt be a cop.”
Should not be allowed to have a dog either.
But when some negligent K9 handler kills his dog when locking it in his closed patrol cruiser in the middle of summer, then hey it's just loss of equipment. Oh well, don't do that again. Anyway, get a new dog in here.
Doesn't sit right with me, considering that I can remember seeing a police motorcycle honor guard escorting a K9 dog that was 'killed in the line of duty' to a funeral while a police band played bagpipes and teary-eyed mustached officers wept as a 21 gun salute was fired. I had to look around wondering "Am I the only person who thinks they're really overdoing it here?".
I think that means an extra battery (in addition to the modified "backseat" space for the dog.)
I’ve heard of this happening before—maybe a couple of years ago.
Found a story from 2007. Not sure if this is the one I’m remembering. Arizona of all places!
Poor animals. Not a good way for any living creature to go.

Here’s another one from July 18 of this year:
K-9 dog dies after left in hot car

From the one that happened on July 18, 2012 in Arizona:
Officer Lankow is described as distraught following the death of his partner. Cook explained that during Jegs hospital stay, Lankow refused to leave the dogs side.
I want to make sure people understand that [Lankow] is emotionally ruined by this event, Cook told the Arizona Daily Star. His wife is really hurt by this, his kids are hurt.
Sad, sad, sad!
>>Ive heard of this happening beforemaybe a couple of years ago.
There were two died together the same way no more than a few weeks ago. The story was posted here. JoeSixPack might know of the link.
GERMAN SHEPHERD PING LIST
This is a low-volume list so dont worry!
(Please Freep-mail me if youd like to be on or off the list.)
A brave police officer died today!!
This was the worst story I’ve read today — be sure to click on the article to see Zac’s photo, he was a beautiful Belgian Shepard.
(my rescue is part Belgian Shepard, he would give his life protecting us)
How could ANYONE be so F-ING STUPID!!
From the article:
When at the office, the car is either left running with air conditioning on or Zak comes into the building, said Grey. The car was not running and it appears that Zak was overcome by the heat.
Unbelievable!!
Yeah, I just found one that happened in AZ on July 18 (posted above). I don’t know if this is still happening with children—haven’t heard about a case in a long time thank goodness. I remember that one in AZ a few years back where the mother couldn’t find a sitter or something and left her child in the car while she worked.

SILENCE, UNTERMENSCH!
A POLICE STATE IS A SAFE STATE!
Commies in media deliberately glorify cops because they ardently desire a police state. Consider that being a law enforcement person is not sufficiently dangerous to be in the Top Ten Most Dangerous Occupations. US Bureau of Labor statistics has so stated for many years.
But, any police man, even a police dog, killed at work is granted de facto sainthood by the commie crowd. But fishermen, loggers, truck drivers, construction workers - all are ignored despite their occupation being in the Top Ten.
Sorry, that is a German Shepherd.
And it is sad.
On FR you get a child-car every year at least.
I’m convinced we’ve had more troubles with “hot children” because of all the damned communist baby-seat laws.
Sir, you mean Joe 6-Pack
Joe: You were mistaken for your “alter ego” JoeSixPack again. ;-)
I love my dog too, but c’mon dogs aren’t people.
I’m glad you told me, because I come across the occasional pooch story - did a few days ago, in fact - and have been pinging the wrong Joe!
So, when will the dog’s handler be treated like anyone *else* responsible for the death of a police dog?
And to think we are suppose to depend on these guys to protect us!
I can’t believe this happened again. If an officer sees a child- or an animal, in a car, wouldn’t they do something about it? Do they think they’re somehow immune? Or is there foul play involved?
This is just bizarre.
Judas Priest what the hell is it with cops and dogs lately? If they’re not shooting them, they’re roasting them alive in squad cars! F’ing cops.
If a criminal kills a police dog it’s murder..
I expect no less of a charge for the officer.
He doesn't anymore.
He doesn't anymore.
I don’t know, this guy drops by our office quite a bit and usually leaves the dog in the car with the thing running. Really awesome dog. He has a remote release and had to use it when he went to serve a failure to appear warrant and got jumped by the whole family. That dog saved his life.
When they’re not killing citizens’ dogs, they’re killing the dogs the taxpayers have bought them.
Point is, when non officer kills police dog, it’s a felony murder charge. Cops ought to be held to same standard. And negligent homicide isn’t murder one, either, so I am cutting the officer a break.
I wonder. Will the officer be charged with murder, like one of us lowly serfs would be, if we’d killed a K9?
I knew someone would post such and here's my reply:
While I understand the superiority of the human mind and emotions, I've come to love dogs in general more than I love many human beings. Of course, I will defend a person over a dog. However, "man's best friend" is just that - loyal with unconditional love...certain breeds to the exception.
Yes, I project my human emotions on my little Abby-girl. Still, she gives me more joy than almost any human has in my 62 years. Bottom line: I could live without half of humanity, but would be devastated if my little girl was in pain or died tomorrow.
George Orwell was a genius.
Thank God!
