I was up to Durango yesterday and found a section of Thread Augason Farms family food storage products.

We had a small section of that stuff here at our wallyworld a year and a half, maybe two years ago. I bought a cart full, but when I went back for more in a few days it was all gone, and hasn’t been back since.

They still have plenty of Little Debbie concentrated sugar snacks though. :-(

This is the store - in a rural location, surrounded by ranchers, farmers, and a growing community of gardeners - that has never carried canning jars/lids/supplies, and this season has a downsized Garden Department...

It’s just pathetic....

I’ve never seen these at my local Walmart, and I was just there this morning. I did notice Target selling canning supplies last fall.

If you need them badly, get on the website and order them. It is about 25 year shelf life if kept in the basement cool and moderate temps. Avoid attics and garages where summer temps can go to high and ruin the shelf life. You will need plenty of water and means to boil the water and use it to re-hydrate the food. There are companies that sell canned meats like beef, roast beef, chicken, chicken chunks, etc. These cans require a can opener and extra shellac coat where the top/bottom of the can touches the body of the can. This allows for a good seal. Meat are cooked and can be eaten straight out of the can.
Tab open cans are good for about 2 years. Avoid them. Do not mix up the can types if buying can food for good shelf life.

I just ordered a pallet of non-GMO food from them.

Example: I bake bread and resented paying $2-3 for a piddly jar of molasses. I ordered a 6 gallon pail a few years ago for a lifetime supply of molasses. BTW, I heated the molasses on the stove and then poured it into canning jars that I pre-heated and sterilized in the oven at 275F. It should keep for many years.

went to auction this week loaded up with cases of canned goods. many dented but all dated 2013 to 2015. also learned how to make laundry detergent. 3 cents a load. works awesome and i have HE washer. look it up on youtube. all ingredients can be found at walmart or ace hardware. amazing. in process of making my own DW detergent n wood cleaner.

I do the homemade detergent and fabric softener (although their formula didn’t work and I now use cheap fabric softener instead of conditioner in it).
So far so good on it.

Are you on Pinterest? Lots of good recipes for cleaning supplies. The shower cleaner with Dawn can’t be beat.

And btw, I tried the dishwasher detergent. It left a horrible powder on my glasses.

I elected to get some phosphate instead and use half the Cascade. Works like a charm at half the price.

Do you have tips on what to do (other than moving!) if you live in South Florida (like us)?

We have a pretty large garden and we get a lot from it. We grow three plantings... probably your Spring planting in the Fall, another like planting in maybe late February early March, and a “summer” planting (cowpeas, sunflowers, several types of peppers, sweet potatoes) in mid to late May . But “summer temps” for you are winter here, and we have no basement (water table not too deep).

We do get about 100 avocados each year from our tree, and trade them with our neighbor for mangoes, but more variety is always nice.

We are getting into home canning, but as latecomers.

Check out your local Historical Society - remember that people lived, and grew and stored food, in your area for millenia before electricity/refrigeration/supermarkets came along...

I did the “Vinegar and conditioner” recipe.
I had SO much static, the kitten stuck to a towel. Only kidding but it was bad. AND it was like sandpaper towels.

Now I get the big cheap bottle of Fabric softener, add three cups of vinegar to one of the softener and my clothes are soft and static free.

I’ve eliminated dryer sheets because of it. Gave the lint screen a good scrub (the chemicals build up) and the dryer works in 1/3 less time. Downy ball (the person that invented those should get a medal!) popped in at the start of the wash and it works perfectly.

canning is even easier here buy during the glut periods when each crop is coming in and can for later. With all the gardening you are already doing ratcheting up a notch to cover more of your needs won’t be a problem. Florida is also full of wild edible food as well, get a good book and find an experienced forager. There are lots of landscape plants that are also edible and groups have meetings and plant sales all over the state. Your extension office is also a valuable resource.

We have a dented can place near us. I really need to restock. I make my own soap. It’s amazing what you can save. We buy 1/4 cows and 1/2 pigs.

My grocery shopping bills are mostly produce. I can do shopping for under $60 a week.

It’s way less during the produce season.

Haven’t seen it at Sam’s Club. Not in the Walmart grocery near us, haven’t been to the big Wal-mart up the highway.

did you use lemon sugar free kool ade? it has citric acid which cuts down on film. 2 packets unless u have hard water then 3 or 4.

I buy the huge jug of citric acid from Amazon for the d/w. So far, it’s lasted over a year (with half left). One Tbs. per load, about every third load. Works great on keeping glasses sparkling, with our (hard) well water.
