Sheriff blames free speech as likely cause of Arizona massacre
Examiner ^ | January 9, 2011 | Martin Hill

In a press conference hours after a deadly massacre in Arizona, Pima County Sheriff Clarence W. Dupnick targeted free speech as a likely cause of the shootings...Reflecting further, Dupnik aimed his ire at radio and television programs: "And today I want to tell you that I hope that all Americans are saddened and as shocked as we are. And I hope that some of them or most of them are as angry as I am and as a lot of us are. And I think it's time as a country that we need to do a little soul searching. Because it's the vitriolic rhetoric that we hear day in and day out from people in the radio business and some people in the tv business..."

Sheriff Dupnik was quoted in the San Francisco Chronicle as saying "When you look at unbalanced people, how they respond to the vitriol that comes out of certain mouths about tearing down the government. The anger, the hatred, the bigotry that goes on in this country is getting to be outrageous. And, unfortunately, Arizona I think has become sort of the capital. We have become the Mecca for prejudice and bigotry."....

Dupnik added "Let me say one thing, because people tend to pooh-pooh this business about all the vitriol that we hear inflaming the American public by people who make a living off of doing that. That may be free speech, but it’s not without consequences."...

Early last year, Sheriff Dupnik made national news when he announced that he would refuse to enforce Arizona's new immigration law SB 1070:...

No sheriff. It isn’t free speech that is the problem. It is the action of a very sick individual who should have been in treatment long before this action, and apparently your office knew about him.

It’s difficult to make an assessment or diagnosis from scanty information, but I’d say the shooter is mentally deranged.

What that mental illness is exactly is for the psychiatrists who will examine him to determine.

The main problem right now is the abomination of the left and journalists making political hay out of this.

It’s a spectacle that this moderate Indie is disgusted by and infuriated at the wholesale piling on the Palin scapegoat train.

* I DO NOT want Palin for president. I DO think that journalists right now are simply the teets on the DNC hog.

There are countless examples of vicious hate speech coming from liberal politicians and public figures. That doesn’t matter to them. What matters is that they can exploit this tragedy for the advancement of their cause and, if they are lucky, can use it to gain even more power and control. To the left this isn’t a tragedy, it’s an opportunity...

What other laws did Sheriff Dickhead refuse to enforce?

I wonder if he's hiding his own incompetence in re Loughner.

Sheriff’s are politicians like anyone else. That’s why when only the police have guns, it is a police state.

If I recall correctly, the hippies labeled the first of their riots at Berkley as “The Free Speech Movement”. Changed their minds have they? I guess that is why they all started carrying around those little Red Books.

Clarence is trying to paint himself up as the anti-Arpaio. Unlike Sheriff Joe, he sits on his ass all day and refuses to do his job. His office was one of the “sources” that released the information that Giffords had died yesterday. Yeah. He’s got a lot of credibility.

Sounds like the sheriff is ready to send out the SWAT team and stomp out some free speech. I wouldn’t want to be a Tea Party person in his county.

There’s nothing like a good tragedy for attention seekers to make their political statements. I suppose we’ll hear from the Gay Nazi’s next.

Every time this 74 year old Democrat fossil stands before the TV cameras, he indicts the judgement of Pima Co. voters. When he calls AZ the capital of bigotry and vitriol, why do the people of that county not run him out of office?
Shame on Democrats, dancing on the graves of the dead victims in this tragedy.

It’s not news that Sheriff Dupnik is a shameless pc slimeball. He’s just becoming known to a wider audience.

The right was blamed for the JFK assassination done by an avowed Communist The right was blamed for the RFK assassination done by an Arab Muslims The right was blamed for the assassination of MLK which may or may not be true. ( I still believe it was a contract hit) The right was blamed for the attempted assassination of Gerald Ford by the Socialist hippie Squeaky Frohm. The Right was blamed for the assassination of John Lennon by a psycho. The right (rhetoric)was blamed for the attempted assassination of President Reagan by another leftest.
Nothing new here. Same Stuff Different Day. I do find it interesting that most political assassinations and assassination attempts seem to come from the left. I would ask if there had been any studies on this, but that is a silly though since the left leaning intelligentsia or media ain't gonna do anything to make them look bad.

Exactly Obama wants to punish our enemies, and he said last Friday in Philadelphia at a fund raiser, referring to the republicans if they bring a knife to the fight, we will bring a gun.. he was going to kick some ass not too long ago, over who was responsible for the bp spill....

“Sounds like the sheriff is ready to send out the SWAT team and stomp out some free speech. I wouldn’t want to be a Tea Party person in his county.”

Exactly. Any conservatives living outside the area should avoid his county until his electorate wises up and removes him. Those living in his county need to come to Free Republic, donate and become members to counter his left wing hate speech.

““It almost seemed like he was on his own planet, because his comments would have nothing to do with what we were talking about,” Ali said.”

The rambling quotes we have seen sound very much like the Loughner kid is suffering from schizophrenia.

“Bob Mulholland?”

Probably. Bob Mulholland is something along the lines of a Keith Olbermann.

Xian @ #3,,

Here you go.

I found this list at JOM.

Why don’t people who are so intent on blaming things politicians have said for this tragedy ever mention rhetoric from Democrats and liberals including:

President Obama:

“If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun,” Obama said in Philadelphia last night. “Because from what I understand, folks in Philly like a good brawl. I’ve seen Eagles fans.”

And “I need you to go out and talk to your friends and talk to your neighbors. I want you to talk to them whether they are independent or whether they are Republican. I want you to argue with them and get in their face.”

Or John Kerry who said on the Bill Maher show: “I could have gone to 1600 Pennsylvania and killed the real bird with one stone.”

Or Howard Dean “I hate the Republicans and everything they stand for…”

and: “This is a struggle between good and evil and we’re the good?”

and “we need to remember that the enemy here is George Bush, not each other.”

Or Senator Chuck Schumer who called a flight attendant a “bitch.”

Or the Florida Democrats who ran an ad calling for the assassination of Donald Rumsfeld

Or New York State Comptroller Alan Hevesi who called for Senator Schumer to “put a bullet between the president’s eyes?”

Or Jonathan Chait who said “I hate President George W. Bush.”

Or singer Rickie Lee Jones who aid of President Bush “You’re an ignorant, low-class, opportunistic man, both personally and politically, who does everything for political gain and nothing for the wellbeing of the people, and you should not be in office, and the kind of fascism you’re perpetrating on our country we don’t want, and you’re out. We’re done with you. Ffffhgggmm.”

And when asked if she would be willing to take Bush out for the benefit of democracy? “If I say that, I might get arrested when I go back. And I have to go home.” She’s thinking it out carefully. “I guess the question is, would I kill anyone? And the answer is, no. But would I feel sorry if someone killed him? No, I wouldn’t. It would depend on who killed him, I guess.”

Or “The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn” where they superimposed the words “Snipers Wanted” over an image of Bush delivering his acceptance speech at the Republican convention.

Or Nobel Peace Prize winner Betty Williams who said she could kill President Bush?

Or Randi Rhodes who joked about killing the President?

Or Reverend Wright who called Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, Condoskeeza [sic] Rice.

Or England’s Charlie Brooker who wrote: “On November 2, the entire civilised world will be praying, praying Bush loses. And Sod’s law dictates he’ll probably win, thereby disproving the existence of God once and for all. The world will endure four more years of idiocy, arrogance and unwarranted bloodshed, with no benevolent deity to watch over and save us. John Wilkes Booth, Lee Harvey Oswald, John Hinckley Jr – where are you now that we need you?”
