Green layoffs

(VIDEO AT LINK)

President Obama and Arnold Schwarzenegger at the Solyndra plant in May. The second part is here. The third part is here.

From Green Beat:

Troubled solar panel maker Solyndra announced the company will close its first factory to save $60 million in operating expenses, and will lay off 40 workers just seven weeks after opening their second plant, a $733 million facility.

The company’s CEO Brian Harrison said the new facility is more cost-efficient than the old one, according to the New York Times, which first reported the story. The company has fallen on hard times, in part because of the rising tide of Chinese solar makers who can produce cheaper panels and are challenging American companies for business.

The story went on to say that the Department of Energy loaned* $535 million to the company.

*That’s what they mean when they say the government guaranteed a loan. No actual money exchanges hands from the government to the lender unless the borrower defaults.

So green jobs are a myth. At least for Americans.

You know how we can get even cheaper energy and employ more people without government loans or subsidies or tax credits?

By mining coal.

Are they "unintended consequences" if they were intentional?

Many of the new ethanol plants have shut down. It was a “take the money and run” scenario.....And using corn is STUPID....I haven’t had a good steak in months.

I work for one of the “green” companies. The pay is great after 7 months of no pay.
But I don’t know if the process is viable. I may be looking for a new job soon myself.

I worked for one. It was one of the most dysfunctional and crooked organizations I had ever encountered. The lying, lame, lazy, and thieving were rewarded regularly. It is still in business somehow.

A couple years back, they were caught cheating big time on taxes due here in SC. No telling how long that had been going on. They survived that and even built a new facility.

A new facility with the absolute minimum data connection, one phone line, and 20 amp power to run dozens of servers and PCs to wipe all day and overnight plus normal needs and use. You could tell when the PTZ cameras were being actively watched, the network would drop to almost nothing.

The same breakers would trip and the process would have to start all over. The guy who designed the building was supposed to be an electrical engineer that had been with the organization from the beginning. Even running at half of what was specified, the electrical system would trip out anyway.

The design on electrical and process is great. We are using Delta V for Control Room. The process itself is the question.
I have been in this business 32 yrs. I have seen successes and failures.
I am at not sure on this one.I hope it turns out well. I am by far the most experienced operator here. But my legs aren’t what they used to be.

I hope your job is secure! We’ve spent the last two years waiting on projects to start, working awhile, then waiting again. Big Corporations are absolutely scared of this president and what he will do. I’m hopeful that they will be more confident with a republican controlled Congress.
