Actor and film producer Kevin Costner has become an unlikely hero of the Gulf oil leak disaster. Costner has a company that produces machines that separate oil from water using a centrifuge system. BP has purchased 32 of the machines.

Three of the machines are expected to be deployed and working this weekend, with the rest in operation within the next sixty days. The machines, built by Costner's company Ocean Therapy Inc, are designed to purify two hundred thousand gallons of water each day of operation. Costner spent seventeen years and twenty million dollars of his own money developing the water purification machines.

Maybe this is his apology for “Waterworld?”

Let’s wait to see how well his machines work before we bestow the Congressional Medal of Honor upon him.

Assuming these machines will do the job, and i hope they do, what takes so long to put them in action?

I thought he had 32 ready to go. Time is everything here.

Separate and purify is [sic] two very different things.

Try it again. But think first. When water is purified, what happens? Impurities, that is, those substances not water, particulate matter, dissolved minerals, etc, are separated from the water. Separation is the process by which something is purified.

Wow, this turned into a cynical thread real quick.

At least Costner has something to offer that may help instead of just sitting at his keyboard and bitching.

Thanks for posting, I hope his invention helps and he makes a fortune from it.

“Costner spent seventeen years and twenty million dollars of his own money developing the water purification machines”

Oh the marvels of private initiative and risking ones own capital! Had this been left to the government we'd be lucky to get two midnight basketball teams that didn't steal the equipment.

I liked “Waterworld.” I am not kidding. I guess I am the only one.

I remember liking “the Postman” too.

I also like Waterworld. I liked The Postman, as well, but I preferred the book.

Costner put $20M of his own money where his mouth is. I hope his gadgets work, but I have a lot of respect for him whether they do or not. I don’t even care if he’s a liberal. I hope he makes a fortune with these machines.

A Hollywood nitwit can't sell his machines but is connected enough to force BP to buy them to put on small fishing vessels which are being used as skimmers. Some hero.

Meanwhile, a ship owner in Taiwan coverts a supertanker the size of an aircraft carrier into a skimmer and his ship is tied up in Norfork awaiting the Coast Guard, the EPA and Obama to give the OK to use it. The media barely reports on it too (I've yet to see this ship mentioned on TV)

Actually, I did like Waterworld. Only after I was lucky enough to work with him on “For Love of the Game.” He is a registered GOP, but fell to the DARK SIDE with this OBAMA BS.

His machines, from what FEW reports there actually were, are 95 - 97%.. which is still good enough.

A Hollywood star nitwit can't sell his machines but is connected enough to force BP to buy them puts his money where his mouth and helps to build a machine to support a cause he believes in and to put(s) them on small fishing vessels which are being used as skimmers. Some hero.

Fixed it for you
