Why Conservatives Have Trouble Getting Elected
Publius Forum ^ | 11/28/09 | Warner Todd Huston

The reasons that I could never get elected to any government position is the same reason why conservatives have a tough time getting elected and, if they end up elected, can't govern in this era of the ill-educated voter. First I'll lay out my main principles...

Leave me alone Stop taxing me Shove your regulations

That's about it. Though there are complexities and nuance contained in them, these are the main tenets of modern conservatism simply put. And therein lies the problem. How can one get elected when his basic tenets are that government should do less, stay out of our lives, and mostly go unnoticed and unseen? In essence a conservative is saying: "Elect me and I'll do nothing for you." It's a tough message to sell in a day when people have lost touch with the American principles that are contained in those very tenets...

Can’t argue the logic. Everyone seems to demand that their politicians “do something”. Limited government is a tough sell these days.

Retouch the American people before it's too late.

Don't make Glenn Beck have to run for office and hold the water of politicians for crying out loud.

We need the likes of Beck where they are.

I think we should run on this platform and this this platform alone and we'd win in a landslide:

VOTE FOR HILDY, I CAN'T DO ANY WORSE.

The main reason is that most people who vote, vote for someone they think will give them something for nothing. They want someone who will rob Peter to give to them [the Pauls].And to compound the felony , freedom means nothing to them. They are more than happy to live as slaves, just do the government takes care of them.

After enough of them are made into soap bars and lampshades I thought that they may change their minds. But on second thought, I realized that stupidity never changes. Ignorance changes but never stupidity.

That in a nutshell is thepoblem that Conservatism faces.

It is not going to happen overnight!

The People are too dependent on the Government..Social Security, Medicare, MediAid, etc. It is going to take a least a generation to wean them off it!

The place to start is the Education. The Local School District can simply stop accepting Federal Funding. Then they can teach the courses they want in their own way and there is not a thing the Feds can do anything about it!

Educate the public as we go along to achieve the Freedom and Liberty!

It will be a rough go!

Term Limits has to be in place to start doing something!

The left never rests. All the behind the scenes manipulation of virtually everything ends up forcing people to feeling that big government is the only answer. Thats how we get to where we are. Thing is, the elite prosper and they hand out crumbs to those that believe them while they devastate the masses with envy, hard feelings and greed. A greed that will never be satiated because that was never their intention. They always keep you wanting more. A more that you will never get. Not ever, even while they sap your freedom. Thats how it works.

All goes back to all the sins. There is no perfect government. There are no perfect laws. There are no perfect law enforcers, no perfect employers, no perfect employees. The best we will have in life is personal freedom, God, Country, Guts, and an honest living. That is until the left steps in to divide and exploit. Why? personal power and untold riches off the backs of the divided masses.

The only way people know they have been had is when everyone is poor and miserable and they realize they are slaves with no freedom left. Doesn’t even matter what skin color you are. The biggest fear of the elitist is if the unwashed masses ever can see through their exploitation and realize that they, the unwashed masses, are really on the same page. There are more of us than there are them.

This has always been their greatest fear. If this happens, the elitists will know they are dead meat. I long for that day.

How about “I will work to restore your freedoms?” How about working towards enforcing immigration laws? How about getting laws more friendly towards energy extraction and production?

From an email chain:

The most eye-opening civics lesson I ever had was while teaching third grade last year. The presidential election was heating up and some of the children showed an interest. To make it even more interesting, I decided we would have an election for a class president. We would choose our nominees. They would make a campaign speech and the class would vote.

To simplify the process, candidates were nominated by other class members. We discussed what characteristics these students should have. We got many nominations and from those, Jamie and Olivia, were picked to run for the top spot.

The class had done a great job in their selections. Both candidates were good kids. I thought Jamie might have an advantage because he got lots of parental support. I had never seen Olivia's mother.
The day arrived when they were to make their speeches and Jamie went first. He had specific ideas about how to make our classroom a better place and how to make the playground a safer place. He ended up by promising to do his very best.

Everyone applauded. He sat down and Olivia came to the podium. Her speech was concise. She said, "If you will vote for me, I will give you ice cream." She sat down.

The class went wild. "Yes! Yes! We want ice cream." She surely could have said more, but she didn't need to. Jamie was forgotten. Olivia won by a landslide.

A discussion followed. How did she plan to pay for the ice cream? She wasn't sure. Would her parents buy it or would the class have to pay for it? She didn't know. The class didn't really care. All they were thinking about was ice cream.

Every time Barack Obama opened his mouth he offered ice cream and 52% of the American electorate reacted like nine-year-olds. They want ice cream.

The other 48% of us know we're going to have to feed the cow and clearn up the mess.

It is evident that this author labors under the false belief that government K-12 schools can be reformed. They can't.

Why?

Answer:
Government schools are a daily lesson in socialism! Simply by attending a child learns that the government can take money from his neighbor to pay for a service his parents want for FREE! Do this every day for 13 years for 1 to 3 generations and we get citizens who approve of the Federal Reserve, direct election of Senators, the IRS, FDR's New Deal, Johnson's Great Society, thousands of other socialist programs, and now OBAMA!

Socialism can be reformed. Government schools are a **daily** socialist lesson. Government schools MUST BE SHUT DOWN because socialism can't be reformed!

Solution: ( recently posted on another thread)

Conservatives MUST set up private education foundations that would award grants to conservative teachers willing to open tuition-free private one room school houses. The foundations would certify the teacher, approve the curriculum, test the students, and run community wide sports teams and arts programs. If women can run day care centers out of their homes, why not one room schools?

Simultaneously conservatives MUST work to SHUT DOWN every government K-12 school in the nation! Simply by attending, children learn that it is OK for the government to take money from their neighbor to pay for something their parents want for FREE. Do this for 1 to 3 generations and these citizens will willingly vote for the Federal Reserve, the IRS, FDR's New Deal, Johnson's Great Society, and now Obama!

If our nation's colleges and universities were filled to the brim with young adults fully capable of defending their faith and our nation's founding principles, their Marxist professors would wither before them! In less than a decade these young people would reconquer the cultural landscape.

While I do not favor giving away free education ( except to the deserving poor) we must do this initially. Why? Answer: Because that is the tuition charged by our price-fixed government schools. We must, at least at the beginning, match the government school price. But...Even if conservative private education were tuition free, children do know the difference between the acceptance of charity and taxes collected under the threat of police action. Charity inspires gratitude. Socialism engenders feelings of entitlement and envy.

Finally,....We must give up the idea that churches will rise up and attend to the educational needs of their children! Why? Answer: There are too many government school employees and those who benefit indirectly from the government schools sitting in the pews! Few ministers are willing to bite the hand that puts money in the collection plate.

"How can one get elected when his basic tenets are that government should do less, stay out of our lives, and mostly go unnoticed and unseen? In essence a conservative is saying: "Elect me and I'll do nothing for you."

We need to learn to communicate again, that's for sure. The argument that I'll do nothing for you, is the negative inverse of the Democrats' message. What we need to do, especially in the Obama world, is tell people what we won't do TO them. We need to make the case again that the government is not the solution to the problem - the government is the problem. If people understand that their own government is standing in their way, bankrupting their future, curtalining their freedoms, then suddenly the idea of electing someone who plans to get out of your way and leave you alone is mighty appealing.

The reason they have a tough time getting elected is because they always try to sound like liberals. Obama ran on cutting government line by line. Reagan ran on cutting government. EVERY candidate likes to say that they are going to cut Government but people who pay attention are not idiots. It’s those who only pay attention during election time who get fooled.

I bet that it will be much easier to win by saying that they are going to stay out of your lives now that they saw the other side of the coin. It will then be our duty to educate the younger generation so that this never happens again.

Just wait, the next person to stand behind America, promise to be a Conservative is going to win by a landslide.

I disagree. No message is too tough to sell. Even a do-nothing message can be spun as doing something to Dims in check or protecting one’s freedoms.

Conservatism is Common Sense should be the theme.

Start pointing out all the stupid Dem policies; apartments for teenage mothers, bailouts or failing companies, gay marriage, mortgages or unqualified applicants, college loans for failing kids, not hiring the best applicants, treating terrorists the same as other criminals, letting people who break in stay and then supporting them, and on and on. Point out that people wouldn't do it or their own family and friends, why should we allow the government to do it with our money.

That says it in a nutshell. Conservatives always have an uphill battle. They can only promise "I'll work to give you the freedom to advance as far as your abilities take you.". Meanwhile the liberal says "vote for me and you'll get free ice cream."
Really most people, from 9 to 99 years old, just want mom and dad to take care of them

Sport, as JFK once said of Joe McCarthy being “on to something”, you are here. People will denounce chattel slavery of the ante-bellum South but shackle themselves into servitude for a mess of liberal pottage and never know what they did.

I think Neal Boortz is the one who said something like, “If you send a kid to a Catholic school and they come home thinking that Catholicism has all the answers, you would never be surprised.

“And if you send a kid to a Baptist school and they come home thinking that Baptists have all the answers, you would never be surprised.

“So why are you surprised when you send a kid to a government school and they end up thinking that the government has all the answers?”

“I will NOT confiscate your money and give it to those who do not work, in order to buy their votes!”

“I will NOT trample your right to keep and bear arms, thereby making you defenseless in your own home or in your own town!”

“I will NOT apologize to weak, Marxist nations like France for the greatness of the United States.”

“I will NOT ignore truth and facts in order to be politically correct!”

“I will NOT seek to impose my will, my beliefs, my ideas of right and wrong on the American people.

“I WILL deport illegal aliens.”

So how about conservative candidates get THESE messages to the American public.

Alas, a majority of voting Amerikans prefer the tyranny of “safety” for some “risky scheme” like liberty.

We know the results when nations make that choice.

Hence, the USA has long passed the tipping point driving it into darkness. It may re-emerge, but only at a great price, which will have to be paid in the blood of patriots and tyrants.

Can you point to examples where western democracies have undone the damage socialism has caused? The only rollbacks I can think of were precipitated by collapse, and not even in democratic contexts.

Not being argumentative, but hoping you can enlighten me.

I think the union-busting done by Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher would fall in this category.

In the beginning he states his main principles as a Conservative as follows:

Leave me alone
Stop taxing me
Shove your regulations

In the end, to implement the solution to the problems he states:

It will take all of us as a movement...
It will take all of us to defeat...
It will take a concerted effort to defeat...

Given the main principles he's not likely to get the cohesion necessary for implementing his solution.

Interesting point, though all the “leaving alone” is to be done by government. Community, friends and family aren’t included in the “leaving alone” I don’t think.
