We owe a lot to the Minutemen. It's amazing how those brave volunteers have elevated the illegal immigration issue and finally forced Washington to pay attention. As a resident of the Left Coast who can see firsthand the problems that illegal immigration is causing to society, I tip my hat to them.

The Minutemen just may be the last patriots in the country. They should be a model of change for conservatives. When no one in a position of power will do what's right, it's time for the American people to step up and do what needs to be done. This tactic could and should be used for issues other than immigration.

They are true patriots, that's for sure. And they used the same model that our forefathers employed -- voluntary organization of willing men (and women!) to answer a threat to our republic.

Conservatives should definitely tip their hats to Gilchrist and his fellow patriots for what they've done.

With all respect, I do not grasp how many here lay the immegration blame on President Bush's doorstep.

Yes, I understand he is currently president, but this whole illegal immigration issue has been going on in some form since Reagan's day, and probably before.

Let me stipulate that I support airtight border enforcement. However, like it or not, there is a strong constituency in the form of agricultural and business interests that have been driving this train for DECADES. This constituency is not going to go away quietly. Are they wrong? I believe they are. But my point is that it does take time to turn a large ship in the ocean, and the immigration issue is a large tanker that should have been turned a long, long time ago.

I recall anytime someone raised the illegal immigration issue the Democrats and the MSM deliberately branded those people as racists as they themselves openly pandered for the Hispanic vote. Now we have packaging telling us - in Spanish - how soft the toilet paper is!

My larger point is that this is a huge policy issue that, while rightfully being debated now, is long over due. My fellow Freeper who are intent on lacerating this president on this issue due so with no regard to modern political history or the other powerful political interests that must be successfully talked down.

WACO, Texas — President Bush yesterday said he opposes a civilian project to monitor illegal aliens crossing the border, characterizing them as "vigilantes."
He said he would pressure Congress to further loosen immigration law.
More than 1,000 people — including 30 pilots and their private planes — have volunteered for the Minuteman Project, beginning next month along the Arizona-Mexico border. Civilians will monitor the movement of illegal aliens for the month of April and report them to the Border Patrol.
