An Indian student from the lowest Dalit caste was hacked to death and his wife critically injured in southern India in a suspected "honour killing" by relatives angered by their marriage, police said Monday.
Three men armed with sickles and sharp weapons attacked the 22-year-old student and his wife, who is from a higher caste, on a crowded street in Tamil Nadu state on Sunday.
Local police commissioner N Manjunatha said the 19-year-old woman's relatives were angered by the couple's marriage.

Indian culture is one of the most morally bankrupt in the world.
I think it’s a bit of a stretch to call him a boy and refer to his wife in the same headline.
Yep, the caste system there is horrible, but it is getting better. My MIL married my FIL, she was high caste Hindu and he was Catholic. She literally had to run away with him lest her brothers Kill her... she eventually reconciled with them.
Now days, arranged marriages are common, but the kids both have much more say than before or simply refuse a given partner. Some of the rural area would be more hard core.
Take out the urban black (another morally bankrupt culture) murder rate and the US isn’t much different than other countries. Throw in the reprehensible caste system and other practices such as sati and it’s bottom of the barrel, rubbing shoulders with Islam.

My question is, why is this tabloid article of interest on FR, since India is not at war with us, is not mentioned in the litany of “bad trade deals” and we have elections going on today?
I assume you would be greatly offended if a negative article were to appear about Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Russia, or North Korea since they are not at war with us.

I’ve seen several write-ups on this incident in western news sources and every one of them has got it wrong. The Dalits are not the lowest caste, they have no caste at all. The Hindu Varna teaches there are four castes, and Dalit is none of them. The fact that they are excluded from any caste is precisely why they are “untouchable.”
