Mississippi Flag, a Rebel Holdout, Is in a New Fight
The New York Times ^ | November 7, 2915 | CAMPBELL ROBERTSON

LOUISVILLE, Miss. — In single strokes after the massacre of nine black churchgoers in Charleston in June, Confederate battle flags were taken from statehouse grounds in South Carolina and Alabama, pulled from shelves at major retailers like Walmart and declared unwelcome, if to (limited effect), at Nascar races.

What happened so swiftly elsewhere is not so simple in Mississippi. The Confederate battle flag is not simply flying in one hotly disputed spot at the State Capitol but occupying the upper left corner of the state flag, which has been flying since 1894. (And as recently as 2001), Mississippians voted by a nearly two-to-one ratio to keep it. Recent ( polling) suggests the majority have not changed their minds.

In your haste to be a jerk you may over overlooked the operative word “here”. No one here at FreeRepublic wants to take your flag from you. There are some who have no respect for it, and most who really don’t care either way. I fall on the don’t care side - I have no interest in flying it myself but wouldn’t criticize someone who did.

A FRiendly reminder to be precise in your terminology (because some folks get a might snippy about it ;'). This is the flag commonly known as the "Stars and Bars":

This flag is the one known as the "Confederate Battle Flag" or "The Battle Flag of the Army of Northern Virginia":

But this flag, called the "The Second Confederate Navy Jack" is what most people commonly identify with as the "Confederate Battle Flag":

If it is true that you have no problem with the flag, then go ahead and state that you have no problem with Mississippi flying the Rebel Flag and Confederate memorials flying the Rebel Flag, etc.

I think that Mississippians should decide what state flag they fly and that it isn’t and shouldn’t be my decision. Similarly it isn’t up to me to decide whether or not a local community flies a particular flag at a memorial.

What I would voice an objection to would be flying the American flag subordinate to any flag.

Well fine then. I can respect some of your views. You may be pretentious and you may call me a jerk, but you are no where near the A-hole as JMACUSA. I would love for him to go into a bar in the deep South and call all of their ancestors traitors. I assure you his condescending attitude would be most unwelcome. :)

Thanks, man. You may have just saved my life. Did I reveal my true "stripes"? j/k I believe that when my father took me to the Centennial at Gettysburg, the hat that I talked him into letting me wear, (the grey Johnny Reb cap) had a sticker of flag number 3 on the top. I was only nine, but I suspected that my father was somewhat of a Southern sympathizer. He talked a lot about States rights. But, I guess it is no secret now, I approached Gettysburg from the North (kinda like Lee did, only different). Any Yankee, without some rebel spirit, ain't worth a damn.

; )

Did you ever see the movie “No Time For Sergeants”? It’s an oldie from ‘56, ‘57 and stars Andy Griffith as Will Stockdale.

Andy plays a country bumpkin who gets drafted. Most of the movie centers around his initial processing. There is a scene where he meets with a shrink. The shrink asks him where he’s from and Will (Andy) replies, “Georgia”

Shrink (baiting Will): “That’s not much of a state, is it?”

Will: “Well I don’t live all over the state. I just live in this one little place in it.”

Shrink (visibly annoyed: “That’s where Tobacco Road is....Georgia.”

Will: “Not around my section. Maybe you’re from a different part than me.”

Shrink (indignant): “I’ve never been there. What’s more I don’t think I’d ever want to go there. What’s your reaction to that?”

Will: “Well I don’t know....”

Shrink (interrupting): “I think that I would rather live in the rottenest pigsty in Tennesee or Alabama than the fanciest mansion in Georgia. How about that?”

Will: “Well sir, I think where you want to live is your business.”

Shrink (incredulous): “You don’t mind when someone says something bad about Georgia?”

Will (grinning): “I ain’t heard nobody say anything bad about Georgia.”

Shrink (visibly irritated): “Well what do you think I’ve been saying?!”

Will (looking uncomfortable): “To tell you the truth sir, I haven’t been able to make too much sense out of it. Don’t you know?”

Shrink (exploding in anger): “Now watch your step young man!”

I hope you’ve followed along with my small diversion because it has an important point. I watched this movie with my folks when I was just a little sprout but I remembered both the comedy and the underlying message. Some people go around looking to be offended or to offend. I can’t help that - I can only try to modify my own behavior. I’m like Will - I don’t spend a lot of time looking to be offended by something that someone says. There are plenty of A-holes like the shrink looking to push your buttons - why oblige them?

You go out of your way to find enemies in FReepers like jmacusa and HandyDandy....and me when really all we have is a difference of opinion. That’s your prerogative and I’m not inclined to stop you if that’s what gets you off but it seems like a huge waste of energy.

I hope you liked my little story ;’)

“Did you ever see the movie “No Time For Sergeants€?”

I like the vignette where Ben, Will's friend, says something to the effect “my great grandpa fought with Stonewall Jackson.”

Will didn't understand the pride in the claim and responded cheerfully “and I bet he whomped him too.”

Lot's of good dialogue in that movie.

I don't go out of my way at all and I actually liked that old movie. Your continued pretentiousness aside, I actually like Handydandy and have said so. Save your preaching for Sunday.

I don't go out of my way at all and I actually liked that old movie.

Let's test that premise - just for fun. Let's see where you entered this thread and in what fashion.

A simple search of the thread would reveal that you entered at post #254 with an unsolicited and particularly disgusting post to jmacusa. Now there's nothing wrong with posting on a thread, and there's nothing wrong with an unsolicited comment - in fact I made an unsolicited comment in response to your #254 myself - but insinuating yourself into a conversation and telling one of the participants to, well you know what you wrote, fits the criteria of going out of your way to make enemies.

Do you agree?

“The distinction you make is that his error is commonplace and yours is rare?”

I am not surprised by your inability to grasp even broad and blatant distinctions.

It is a daunting task, but let me see if I can explain this so you can understand.

The distinction is that mine is a class of error known as “a typo,” which indicates not a lack of knowledge or erroneous opinion, but a slight physical error in the manipulation of a keyboard or the operation of the hands and fingers.

The other type of error does reflect a lack of knowledge or erroneous opinion.

Before you attempt to provoke me by pretending not to understand this, let me point out that pretty much everyone in the world gets it. You should ask yourself what a failure to understand such a simple thing might say about you.

Virtually your enitre argument consists of one vicious ad hominem after another and ad hominems are not an argument. This Thanksgiving I'm going to be grateful to the Good Lord that he didn't make me you and for here after I've no more intention of ever responding to any of your posts.

Now now, you’re being a bit too hard on our FReeper FRiend. He actually serves a useful, if inadvertent purpose. Bigoted, small-minded, crude - he stands as a living example of what NOT to be as a member of our community. Don’t do as he does and you can’t go wrong ;’)

Good point indeed myFriend. It reminds me of something my late mother always used to say:”God put stupid people on the Earth as an example to the rest of us’’.
