Mississippi Flag, a Rebel Holdout, Is in a New Fight
The New York Times ^ | November 7, 2915 | CAMPBELL ROBERTSON

LOUISVILLE, Miss. — In single strokes after the massacre of nine black churchgoers in Charleston in June, Confederate battle flags were taken from statehouse grounds in South Carolina and Alabama, pulled from shelves at major retailers like Walmart and declared unwelcome, if to (limited effect), at Nascar races.

What happened so swiftly elsewhere is not so simple in Mississippi. The Confederate battle flag is not simply flying in one hotly disputed spot at the State Capitol but occupying the upper left corner of the state flag, which has been flying since 1894. (And as recently as 2001), Mississippians voted by a nearly two-to-one ratio to keep it. Recent ( polling) suggests the majority have not changed their minds.

Men who took up arms against oppressive foreign monarchy not a government they swore allegiance to.

“Just a bit of advice, next time you intend to mean “specious” in a sentence, use the word “specious” (not “meretricious”).”

Keep your advice. English is a rich language, and an educated man can use it richly. Stop resenting people who have a better education.

“And I think that about wraps it up.”

Yes, you have managed to prevent the absorption of any new information, and are as a consequence content to march off with all errors intact.

I was astounded to learn at the late age of 42 (IIRC) that there are people who would rather remain in error than to admit to an error. I can only conclude that they simply lack the moral courage.

“You and I are very different types of thinkers”

Yes, I use the type of reason that can lead to a correct understanding, and which has that as its sole purpose.

“not a government they swore allegiance to.”

Many had sworn fealty to King George. Washington, for instance.

“meretricious” - did someone get themselves a Thesaurus for Christmas last year? Seriously - meretricious?!”

As I just told another poster, stop resenting people who have a better education. That word has been in my active vocabulary for half a century now.

“I’m always suspicious of a man who would use a ten dollar word when a five dollar one would do” - Will Rogers.”

Will Rogers was a humorist, and probably one of the last to mistake humor for profundity. BTW, you didn’t get the joke.

“The challenge was to show evidence that the confeds would have any inclination to free the slaves if they were to achieve independence”

Brainless cackling creates no obligation on my part.

“(since it is one of the cornerstones of lost cause faith that “slavery would have dies out sooner or later on its own”).”

What? No it isn’t. Those are two completely separate propositions. You know, philosophizing about such things does take a certain minimum level of intelligence. It’s not true that just anybody can do it.

“The evidence you provided showed not a sincere effort but a desperate last minute gambit.”

Last minute? Your buddy took pains to show that the quotation I posted was from 1854 (IIRC). It was neither last minute nor a “gambit.” It was a cri de coeur written to his wife.

“They didn’t free a soul out of benevolence - only out of practical necessity.”

Thank you for conceding the argument. I would say, “It takes a big man to admit when he is wrong,” but I’m pretty sure you don’t even realize what you did.

Whether the practical necessity came in the form of a sword to the neck or an empty bank account, the end result would have been abolition. The only difference would have been the ghastly butcher’s bill.

“But, despite your meretricious efforts to paint him as some sort of saintly abolitionist”

I have suspected, and am now sure, that you don’t know a thing about Robert E. Lee. He has not been canonized, but he was vastly more saintly than you, I, or anyone you are ever likely to meet.

“he still owned them”

No. They were his wife’s inheritance, and although the laws of the time placed legal title for a wife’s property in the husband’s name, he was not morally free to manumit them.

“and used them”

I’ll guarantee you that any slaves for whom he had responsibility had a significantly higher standard of living than all but a tiny few of the Irish immigrants in northern cities.

“and enjoyed the fruits of their labor”

That is only wrongful by extension of the wrongful nature of slavery itself.

“and whipped them when he thought they misbehaved.”

Are you just assuming, or have you heard that old canard somewhere? To save time, I’ll copy and paste.

“Since 1859, there have been “accusations” that Lee, once, was involved in the whipping of three runaway slaves. However, to my knowledge, there is no evidence that Lee ordered anyone to be whipped or that he personally whipped anyone.
“Several publications have repeated these allegations during this millennium; however, they have not supplied necessary corroboration to make these accusations factual in my opinion.”

Men in Lee’s social stratum did not whip, rape, or otherwise treat slaves with cruelty, nor did they “sell them down the river” or break up families.

“meretricious - I’ll have to remember that one ;’)”

I won’t be expecting too much.

“Men who took up arms against oppressive foreign monarchy not a government they swore allegiance to.”

I thought all the men I cited were at one time considered British; that they revolted against King George; that they supported the “revolution”; that they supported the Declaration of Independence, meaning they wanted “independence” from England. Do you have information that suggests otherwise?

“I really despise south hating RINO so called freepers than liberals.”

I can remember the very day that I began to recover from liberalism, and the events that precipitated my recovery.

The process, though, was a long one, and I only corrected my thinking on the last two issues when I reached my forties. Many FR posters—if not all—still entertain some leftist positions.

Posters here may not even realize that their positions on the War of Northern Aggression were fabricated by the left for their own filthy purposes, and are supported only by rewritten, revisionist faux history.

What are you on about?

How does what they believe differ from what Northerners who actually fought the war thought for decades afterwards?

Maybe what you believe is the "filthy" revisionist claptrap, whether it was fabricated a century ago or just a few years back by people who wanted to distort the truth.

Oh, you mean you! Yea, that's right - I'm resentful of you because of your education (or something). I must admit - you do an outstanding job of hiding it.

Brainless cackling creates no obligation on my part.

I agree. Providing brainless cackling in return was an unexpected bonus. The rest of your screed was amusing, but empty. You are dismissed.

The mere fact that you call it the "War of Northern Aggression" demonstrates that your rehabilitation is only begun.

That is part of what is being rewritten.

“Maybe what you believe is the “filthy” revisionist claptrap, whether it was fabricated a century ago or just a few years back by people who wanted to distort the truth.”

No, not even maybe. I’m old enough to remember history before it was rewritten.

“you do an outstanding job of hiding it.”

An insult that contains no kernel of truth reveals only the speaker.

“Providing brainless cackling in return was an unexpected bonus.”

Actually, that’s all you’ve provided.

“You are dismissed.”

Howls of derisive laughter, Bruce. Slink off with your feces-encrusted tail between your legs.

“The mere fact that you call it the “War of Northern Aggression” demonstrates that your rehabilitation is only begun.”

I should start calling you “40,” for “40 years behind” and for “40 oz malt liquor,” the preferred drink (can wrapped in a brown paper bag for public consumption) of those who share your opinions on this subject.

My rehabilitation has progressed to the point that I am no longer in thrall to leftist brain slavery regarding that war. Tried to help you. That was a mistake.

“Happy 150th birthday! “

The rewriting did not begin 150 years ago. Back then there were too many men who would not stand for such a thing.

It is only the corruption of academia over the past 45 years or so that has allowed it to advance so far.
