Elderly Couple Hospitalized After Cops Raid Wrong House

HORN LAKE, Miss. — An unidentified elderly Horn Lake couple were hospitalized Thursday after police burst into their home thinking it housed a methamphetamine laboratory.

The incident occurred Wednesday about 4 a.m., said police Capt. Shannon Beshears. Beshears said it was the right address but the wrong house.

Beshears said a heavily armed Tactical Apprehension Containment Team stormed the house.

"We had good information from a reliable source that had been backed up by a purchase of narcotics linked to the address. However, when we arrived at the designated address, there were two houses on the lot. We hit the larger of the two houses.

"It was the wrong house," Beshears said. "The house was totally dark and the TACT members went through to the bedroom looking for the suspects."

A man and a woman — both in their 80s — were injured as TACT team members secured the house although no drugs were found. There were children in the house also, but they were not awakened, Beshears said.

When I lived in L.A., maybe 15 years ago, there was a raid early in the morning in which the L.A. Sheriffs Department raided the wrong home in the mountains above Malibu. They thought the guy was growing marijuana, which he was not. The suspected weed was observed by the Sheriff's helicopter and amazingly no ground inspection was ever made before the raid. The homeowner thinking somebody was breaking into his house grabbed his gun and was shot to death by the cops. Come to find out, although much of the homeowners land was in L.A. County the home was located in Ventura County. The Ventura County authorities were never notified of the raid beforehand. As I recall the police got away with a slap on the wrist. No action was ever taken against them.

I presume the USPS manages to get mail to the correct house.

The officers on the entry team are not at fault. They have no way of knowing if they are hitting the right house or not, so they follow procedure the same way every time amd so did I. I prefer to go home every night and not leve my safety up to arm chair QB's who haven't the nerve to do the job others do.

Entry team is a harrowng experience some times. Other times it is boring. I trained and implemented on the side of harrowing every time.

-another example why most SWAT teams should be disbanded and the members issued a .38 Sp

Agree totally. I bet not one of these SWAT thugs hold in their heart the true meaning of the Constitution. Most of them just like power and pretending they are part of some dumb TV show. Believe me, this could happen to any of us. There is NO place in a free society for this type of police unit.

Puh-leeze. Anyone with a multidigit IQ can figure out that if you have an ambiguous description of the target, you go back and get a clarification.

The victims were 80 years old. Not in their 20s. ANY injury at that age is a potentially life changing event from which they will never recover.

Spot on. There is no excuse for this type of manhandling of octogenarians, short of one of them making threats against the LEOs with a loaded weapon or something.

This "I stand by my men 110%" after screw-ups like this is too commonplace and goes too far to shield the Bad Guys (read: power-drunk LEOs) from the repercussions of their actions. No wonder so many are arrogant SOBs. Apparently it's been reinforced time and time again that they ARE above the law.

"They have no way of knowing if they are hitting the right house or not, so they follow procedure the same way every time amd so did I."

Which part of the procedure calls for roughing up 80 year olds and putting them in the hospital for the crime of sleeping at home in their beds?

Obviously, a mistake was made and it was regrettable," he said. "But, I stand by my officers. I think they acted properly."

For this idiot to say such a thing should result in his immediate firing and retraction of any pension. To say such a thing is an affront to Liberty and the rule of law. I despise how those in command always "stand by their officers." They first and foremost must respect Life and the Constitution. Doing the right this must not matter to them. And they wonder why many resort to calling them pigs.

One of these days, they're going to raid the wrong wrong house and have the entire column destroyed by a homeowner who's better equipped and trained than they are.

The sooner, the better.

Cops have become arrogant housebreakers, IMO. I was shocked this morning (don't know why, though) by a calendar from our local sheriff's department that's on the wall in our employee break room. It shows the 15 members of the sheriff's department (it's a small county) in a 7 x 9 picture all outfitted with their SWAT equipment. The really weird thing, though, is they're all wearing the ski mask type things that hide the face except for the eyes and nose. You can't tell who they are. They look like a bunch of Palestinians, for heaven's sake. Something is radically wrong with a department that puts out a calendar like that.

Many questions to be answered here. Did anyone even bother to watch the informant go to the residence to purchase the narcotics? Was someone using the old peoples residence to sell out of in the day and then leaving?

Was the "other" house on the property a shed or garage which had been converted into a living quarters? This is my suspicion because of the way the "correct address" issue was worded in the article.

We can all form our own judgements based on the reported circumstances but it sounds like the person in charge of the investigation did not have all of the facts before they acted or allowed the raid to take place.

Think of all of the people in your circle of friends or coworkers. The "hard chargers" need someone around to step up and say "Wait, lets look at all the angles here. Its a pretty hard thing and unpopular role to have sometimes, but it is a very important role. It keeps mistakes like this from happening. Maybe others will learn from this terrible occurrence.

Signed,
The guy that tells people to wait...

I can just see the SWAT/NARC thugs yanking the 80 year olds out of their bed and slamming them on the ground.

Such heroes.

Amen. Except then the poor homeowner will probably be charged with attempted murder or murder.

Cool. Does that mean us non-LEOs aren't responsible for anything we do either? Next time I get stopped for speeding can I say it's "not my fault" and get away it?

arm chair QB's who haven't the nerve to do the job others do.

I guess that I, and others here, lack the bravery and courage to kick down the door of a couple of senior citizens and send both of them to the hospital.

if you are going to raid a house, or a building, but it's not exactly clear which is the right building to raid, what is the usual procedure?

Do whatever you want because the serfs--I mean citizens can't do sh*t about it. War on Some Drugs rocks!
