Elderly Couple Hospitalized After Cops Raid Wrong House
Fox News ^ | March 23, 2006 | AP staff

Posted on 03/23/2006 10:59:34 AM PST by seacapn

HORN LAKE, Miss. — An unidentified elderly Horn Lake couple were hospitalized Thursday after police burst into their home thinking it housed a methamphetamine laboratory.

The incident occurred Wednesday about 4 a.m., said police Capt. Shannon Beshears. Beshears said it was the right address but the wrong house.

Beshears said a heavily armed Tactical Apprehension Containment Team stormed the house.

"We had good information from a reliable source that had been backed up by a purchase of narcotics linked to the address. However, when we arrived at the designated address, there were two houses on the lot. We hit the larger of the two houses.

"It was the wrong house," Beshears said. "The house was totally dark and the TACT members went through to the bedroom looking for the suspects."

A man and a woman — both in their 80s — were injured as TACT team members secured the house although no drugs were found. There were children in the house also, but they were not awakened, Beshears said.

I can see this going no where so when your kids end up in a crack house or held hostage don't call the police, they might hurt your cat, go and get them yourselves. Then be prepared to spend your nest egg on lawyers.

When you people learn abut about how entries are done then we'll talk. Who do you think taught the military to do entries in urban warfare thay are now doing in Middle East. The police.

Later.

Beshears said the woman received a dislocated shoulder and the man received bruised ribs.

I've noticed that old folks do not recover very well after breaking a bone. I hope these folks did not sustain broken bones, since these initial reports are sometimes inaccurate.

Why did these old folks resist the cops?

Or were the cops out of control when they entered the home in a dangerous dynamic entry?

I live next door to an 80 year old widow and I suspect that she is feeding stray cats. I am going to kick her door in tonight and tackle her so the cats stop urinating in my flowerbed. Then I will feel like a real man...

LOL. For extra fun, you could dress up in all black like a ninja, and spew profanities at granny while slamming her to the ground.

Guess what, "big Johnson" (your brag reported to admin moderator btw) the public are the ones who ultimately get to choose what kind of policing they get. If the public want something that would make policing the next worst job to being a gardener, rather than the next better, but less innocents get their ribs bashed in, well the public should get it. That's democracy. You don't have hotline to God.

The homeowner thinking somebody was breaking into his house grabbed his gun and was shot to death by the cops.

The War on [some] Drug plus dynamic entries, a dangerous combination for all involved.

IMHO, getting some weed will never be worth the life of a citizen or police officer.

The problem here is simple. They had a warrant.

There were TWO houses and they failed to find out which one was the one to hit.

That should have been clarified or the raid called off/postponed until they knew which one it was.

There is no call for "flip a coin' cop work in this case.

They roughed up the wrong people, likely tipped off their target, and compromised the informant (if the target has squat for brains) as well.

Real friggin' genius, and frankly inexcusable.

This foulup was preventable. Someone did not do their homework.

I am no fan of dynamic entry because a little slop in the paperwork and someone busts down my door, I will shoot first and ask questions later, assuming that anyone breaking into my house does so with malicious intent.

Then what?

"Then knee jerkers like you scream when some guy runs when you try and arrest him in town and either causes a high speed pusuit ( much more dangerous and unpredictable by ststistic and fact ) or takes hostages when he gets home or runs into your house or business."

I've never screamed about mopes who ran. That isn't the police's fault. Not exercising judgement and throwing granny to the ground is the officer's fault. I wonder he put a boot to granny's head.

Sorry, dude. I'm not buying it. There's no need for the ninja gear. There's no need for masks in small towns and there's no need (not even a tactical one) for kevlar helmets. Too many of your brethren (and I know quite a few) are rambo-wannabes in search of an enemy. Police forces need to be SURE of an address before they try to make an arrest and dynamic-entries should be of the last resort.

I'm military too and I keep a gun by my bed. If the police burst into my apartment in the middle of the night screaming, I'd probably be dead because I'd be reaching for my weapon.

SWAT goes where it is asked and has the lawful instrument supporting that position.

Nazis tried that: "I was just following orders, doing my job.", at the Nuremberg trials.

I will close in saying I am not advocating that all police are righteous. My argument here is the members of the entry team are not at fault for the wrong address. You can point to one guy for that, but of course the police haters have to come on board and start quesioning all police. Until you've done some you do not know what they are like. Read all you want. I am just amazed how many here hate police, but are the same ones that used suck up to them when meeting one in a public forum and then slamming them behind their backs. For all you say I have never seen anyone actually be rude to an officer outside the scope of official business ( like being arrested ). So bacially most are hypocrites, bash them here, but buddy up when then need to stay in good graces to avoid that next ticket.

I too sleep with a weapon and will react to any intrusion the same I you. I just pray I do not have to.

As I recall, there was even more to it. The land was coveted to add to the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy, so a pretext to seize it was eagerly seized upon.

Then there's the case somewhere in the south where the cops broke in on some guy and he did shoot the cop dead. No drugs were found, and the dead cop was the only one who allegedly had the information that led to the raid. But he was the Chief's son, so now the shooter is on death row. There have been a couple of threads about the case here.

Mistakes are made but the police are right 99% of the time. You only hear about the 1 out of 100 incidents that they are wrong.

So what if they kill 1% of innocent people in their own home, it's for the children.Right?

This is an interesting story, because it raises an interesting question that some people involved with law enforcement might be able to answer - if you are going to raid a house, or a building, but it's not exactly clear which is the right building to raid, what is the usual procedure?

Excellent question.

The only explanation that comes to my mind is that they didn't want to pay overtime two nights in a row for the same raid. However, in the long run, I suspect this will cost them much more in both dollars and respect.

The smoke of your kind has gotten this whole sordid mess banished to Smokey Backroom.

The public deserves something better than "oops, an accident, we are not to blame" when police harm the undeserving. Why not set up some kind of fund, perhaps fed by legal seizures and fines on legally convicted criminals, to recompense those unfortunates or their families. If an actual criminal is found connected with the injury (i.e. pursuing that criminal resulted in the injury) then the government should sue later to get the compensation back out of the assets of that criminal. But compensation should be paid without the need of the victim to sue.
