September 5, 2001 -- WASHINGTON - Radioactive Rep. Gary Condit returns to Capitol Hill today, promising to focus on congressional business - but he faces growing scrutiny from colleagues and cops over his disastrous defense of his conduct in the Chandra Levy probe.

We've got satellite trucks and TV cameras set up outside his Modesto office too. This "problem" is not going to disappear in a couple of days. The barnyard waste is continuing to be hurled about by the large round occilating air movement machine.
That is some consolation. Here is some more trouble for this wizard.
House Democratic Leader Richard Gephardt has scheduled a series of meetings this week to decide whether Condit should be thrown off the super-sensitive House Intelligence Committee, while House Republicans are pressing for a full-blown House Ethics Committee probe and growing numbers of prominent Democrats are calling for him to resign or announce that he won't seek re-election.
All of which serves him right. No mention lately, of police progress toward finding the body, or the perp. Maybe they have him, back in DC, for the congressional session.
The Democrats' 11th hour 180 on Condit, with what promises to be a doddering parade of sanctimonious grandstanders -- will be as phony and hypocritical as their mock crocodile tears over missing intern, Chandra Levy.Were the subject not so sullen, the flurry of thunderous denounciations belatedly bellowing forth from whited sepulchers would be uproariously entertaining -- sidesplitting, even.
These are the same scamps, lest we forget, who for eight years amiably enabled the Prince of Sleaze, himself.
Shrug off the sham epiphany, folks: This isn't moral/ethical cartharsis we're witnessing; this is hackneyed political damage control, a trite and cynical reversal spawned by alarming poll numbers after Condit's prime time self-immolation.
Dems are taking a beating in the polls, as Americans increasingly view Gary Condit as the odious face of the Democrat party.
They have good reasons to do so.
For four grueling months, the Gephardts and the Daschles effusively aided and abetted a nefarious scoundrel whom everyone knew had lied to police, impeding a probe of a missing person at the most critical juncture, even as the stricken Levy family tearfully begged and pleaded for his cooperation.
Instead, the wretched scumbag spit into their faces, as his (now discredited) chief political smut-peddler, Marina Ein, scurried to spread dirt about Chandra in the media.
Meanwhile, Daschle and Gephardt offered flattering testimonials, reverently extoling Gary as a towering emblem of public service.
As to his irredeemably depraved and degenerate dealings with impressionable subordinates?
Not to worry, Tommy and Dicky would say with a chuckle and a wink; after all, 'everybody does it'.
Then, just as the Chandra mystery was sputtering on fumes, came THE INTERVIEW with Connie Chung, and everything changed -- suddenly.
In the liberal Vade Mecum for ethics and standards, lying isn't wrong; indeed, deception is the sine-qua-non in furthering its radical ambitions and goals.
What is wrong is to lie unconvincingly, unpersuasively -- unClintonesquely, if you will.
In the Democrat party, compulsive dishonesty isn't shunned, but rewarded. Lavishly so.
The better the liar, the bigger the prize.
Under this system de riqueur, Der Shlickmeister's climb to the top of this landfill became all but inevitable.
To Democrats, Gary Condit's "sin" wasn't lying, but supreme incompetence, his inability to 'lance' this swollen 'boil' through obfuscation, turning a tea-sized tempest into another Monica imbroglio.
Condit's error wasn't moral turpitude, but colossal ineptitude -- failing to parlay unbridled venality and self-indulgence into martyrdom.
For a party which recompenses the lowest dregs of vice, and indemnifies the most approbrious scum of the earth, Gary Condit becomes merely another locus point on the Clinton-sleaze continuum.
As such, Clinton and Condit are not the blacksheep of the party as much as the pillars in a den of iniquity.
Condit is the natural byproduct of the moral corrosion and pervasive decay devouring the party like a putrid corpse decomposing.
With Congress' month-long sabbatical finally over, the Condit dilemma for party leaders grows more daunting by the hour.
Notwithstanding Condit's plummeting polls, support for him among the rabid party faithful is anything but wishy-washy.
Hence, the thorny enigma for party elders eager to dump the Condit albatross.
Jettison Condit, and risk incuring the wrath and resentment of party militants.
For them, there is nothing unappealing or embarrassing about Gary Condit.
If anything, he is a veritable role model to be emulated.
Forcibly removing him from Congress -- or even from his perch on the House Intelligence Committee -- could engender a backlash from the party base, who will blindly see it as a cave-in to Republicans.
But Condit, needless to say, has already caused the party irreparable harm, and the longer party leaders dither, the greater the damage becomes.
On the morals/values issues, the scales have already decisively tipped towards Republicans, as the Condit affair stretched the boundaries of acceptable conduct beyond the breaking point.
The Clinton-sleaze continuum is alive and well.
